killed my 308, worth fixing ?

Post by known 2 »

hey guys went for a run out to pac pines this arvo and went throo some deep mud holes, i have a snorkel but i still must have got some crap in the motor.
So now it blow so much smoke i cant see the car behind me and has deisel clatter. can anyone tell me what the problems are cos i suspect the valves are shaged. plus it has next to no oil pressure. and is it worth rebuilding or do i just pic up a new motor.

oh also got mud in gearbox and clutch and broke a shock mount of so it was an expensive arvo.

How handy are you with spanners? how old is the engine?
To me i would do it myself, if you have no oil pressure i would be looking at the main and con-rod bearings if they are shagged the oil pressure will leak past theml
Does the tappets rattle at higher revs?, dont try it if you dont know cause if the bottom end is shagged then you could throw a leg out of bed!

Sounds like a bottom end rebuild depending on the damage anything from $300 to $1500 if you do most of the work yaself and just farm out the machine work.

Its not un-salvagable just a pain in the wallet!

Im guessing you filled it with muddy water. IF it got into the oil and bypassed the filter fine grit is going to be on every running surface.

Rebuid.. not for me.

if it gets rebuilt u know how good the engine is. a 2nd hand motor is just that the ppl u buy them off either dont kno the history or dont want to give u the real version.

2nd hand is a risk. would be nice to hear running before u handed the $$$'s over not always possible tho.

those of you who have seen my car know how high it is and the water in that pic is half way up my door. Now the water got to my engine from 2 places, 1 under my air filter box wich isn't entirely water tight even though it was hooked up to my snorkel .2. through the breather on top of my rocker covers and strait into the tapets.
but hey it didn't give up kept running and allmost got me home.

if you think snorkels will save u think again... 9 times out of 10 the setup is still totally open to the elements...

Have a look at a GQ precleaner/water separator mounting to a snorkle...

less than amusing..

Personaly I'd be pulling the motor and stripping it down for a real apprasial of the "how bad is it "

Once you know if its just a set of bearings & rings then its not going to be too bad to do.
You'd do a rebuild ya self for under a K !

If its beyond a rebuild then get another motor but buying a 2nd hand 308 is asking for problems, you may just end up with another problem motor like the one you have in the engine bay right now...... ripoffs are out there !

308 bits are cheap as chips. just pull it down, get the crank linished, bore and hone the block, new set of pistons, rings, gaskets, cam bearings, oilpump, timing chain some new seals in d head and your on your way for about 500$.

this is a head start

X2.. Good time to learn a little. should be able to do a lot of it yourself.

cheers guys i'm all ready sourcing a replacement motor, and i'm not to worried about long term reliabilty as it's for sale anyway.
i'll sell it with 2 motors one fucked one ?

i don't think rebuilding is an option for me as i don't have the skils or facilities at my place to pull it down. Niether can i aford for someone else to do till late march aprill.
