GQ Factory Locker - Problems

Post by kbhallinan »

I have been trying to get the factory locker on my 88 GQ working, with limited luck.

It seems that the vacuum systen is operating properly, i believe the problem lies in the pin that engages the locker.

On staurday coming out of safeway the DIFF LOCK light decided to come on, and the diff locked and seem to do what it is spose to do. But when i tried to dis-engage it would not come out.

Got it home and got underneath and gave it a tap with the hammer and it disengaged, it seems like it is getting stuck.

Any thoughs?

My next worry is that on full lock the diff makes a clunkin sound, as though the pin is not fully engageing, this only makes this noise of full lock, normal driving and limited turning is ok, or so it seems

Anyone had this problem before, any tips?

Thanks Kieran.

try putting a little sewing machine oil or inox down the 2 lines on the actuator.
otherwise the shaft itself on the actuator can become scored and you may have to remove it and clean it up a little.
try the oil first tho, mine came good after a hours driving round turning it on n off

check the vacumm coming out of the solinoids u might find there is limited vacumm on one outlet. the solenoids are in most cases able to be pulled appart and put back together i actually pulled a bit of grass out of one of mine it was restricting the valve movement. then try sucking on the line u can easily engage and disengage it if that doesnt work id say your diaphram and pin needs some lube like previously stated but try that before rippin ur solenoids appart. i found mine clunked the other day because the vacuum wasnt strong enough to engage it fully. but if u hear that clunk stop because u only have two teeth that engage the locker and they take the corners off very easily, this also causes the locker to disengage by itself coz the teeth slip out of mesh.

mine gets stuck like that too, they usually take a short while to unlock.
i wouldnt be turning full lock with it engaged on the black stuff either.
