Cam you test a Water Pump?

Hi All,
I have a 89 gq Diesel, When I put it to a good hill or hold any gear with revs it heats relativly quickly, It has all new hoses and new 3 core radiator 18months ago, Its either fan which I am about to put twin thermos on or the pump,

So can you test a water pump???

i would leave the viscous fan on it as it works a hell of a lot better then thermo fans. you can buy the special oil of toyota for the fan. it only costs 5 dollars. also have you replaced your thermosat?

Yes, you can test for pressure and for pump generated cavitation.

also is your truck blowing black smoke? may be getting too much fuel which will in cases cause overheating.

it has a new thermostat when i put radiator in, It doesnt really blow much smoke at all, only on start up a little, but i know thats valves,

Running lean would also cause overheating, is that correct?

Try this, i have done this a few times and you would be suprised how crap some water pumps are, even brand new ones.....

Havent tryed it in a patrol yet though........

Nope :D
On a diesel, running rich causes overheating, as opposed to petrol which runs hot on lean mixtures. Check you dont have a air inlet restriction, like a blocked filter etc. Check your viscous hub. Run the car till it gets hot (not overheats though :)) then turn it off. The fan should be almost locked up. When its cold the fan should free spin easy.
