top mount intercooler
Hi badger, yes its off a gu zd30, was $156 for the secondhand air box and new element.Im only running 9psi at the moment and there is a noticable difference high in the rev range, also uses less fuel and the turbo sounds completely different, like it spins more freely!badger wrote:DEN81 is that a GU 3l air box you used there?
also how much are the filters for these and do they flow enough air for 15psi on a td42?
Cheers Den
89 st wagon, 4.2 turbo, top mount intercooler, 3'' zaust, factory locker, 2'' bodylift, 4''lift, superior drop box's, 35'' mtz, custom bullbar, premier winch
Wont have pictures until later in the week, its at a mates place having the pipes welded.Im using a gu scoop with 10'' thermo mounted underneath the cooler.ROCKMUTT wrote:you got any [ictures of how you mounted the intercooler and what sort of scoop you used?

Ok its mounted!
Few sharp bends but there was no performance drop,as i drove around with no scoop for a while. Works best at 60kms and above but the thermo fan will fix that. Lost about 1.5 psi so i plumbed the actuator into the intake side and seems to work well.

Cool, Thanks for that, looking at the space it looks really tight and I couldn't picture it in there.JWB wrote:Yes! I fitted a GU air box in with a piranha dual system!MKPatrolGuy wrote:Has anyone fitted a GU airbox to a GQ that has a 2nd battery fitted? Does it clear the tray OK?

Yeah they are a bit sharp, will change them later. Had it dynoed the other day, went from 69kws at the wheels to 89.6 and from 3000n to 4000n of torque. Can realy feel the diference at as its all below 3000rpm.Pumps at the max as its ready for a rebuild.

Intercoolers
Hey mate,
We would typically see around 100deg lowering of the air temps on the dyno, and about 115-120 out on the road with the extra air speed. I mounted the standard GU radiator in the rear and used it for the intercooler and it gave better thermal loading/extra water volume for slower speed 4x4 work.
The highest inlet temp we recorded was 36-39degree on at 31degree day on the dyno.
Turbo side of intercooler temps around 135-150 running 30-35psi
Cheers Heath

Re: Intercoolers
Thanks for the info Heath, thats some serious cooling! Anything special with the coolant people use...just water / glycol mix?
What sort of drop in intake temps are others getting with water-air I/C? i.e PWR barrels etc

This is where 99% of fools go drasticaly wrong.............
That intercooler, although large in size wont flow that great, the reason being the end tanks arent shaped to get the best airflow posiable from a core size as in the pic.
The intercooler setup in this case would only be using the bottom 2/3's of the overall core area simply because of the restrictive end tanks.
Looks good but dont work as well as it should.

Cant undestand why so many sellers have such high postage costs yet its usually only $16 to actually post !.....
leaving a so-called cost of $34 for packaging .......... wtf
