Whine from Driveline above 60Km/h

Hello all,

Following on from my '06 GV ... Soft Roader??' Thread, I took my car in for a service today as I had an incident on the weekend where I drove through some water that was a little deeper than it looked and subsequently filled my air filter with water and stopped the engine.

I got it going again, and the engine worked itself out ... but since then a whine from the Driveline has developed above 60Km/h.

The Service guys found water in the diff and drained the front and rear and replaced the oil ...

Only problem is that the whine (or drone) is still there

It only occurs when travelling above 60 or 70Km/h and get's higher pitched and louder the faster you go.

It also is only present when the power is on ... take your foot off and the noise stops. Put it back on and the noise starts again.

It's not the engine ... is fine at any revs.

Not sure what could be causing it ... Can anyone help me out with this one??

You might have overheated the gears with water in them on the drive side or maybe your pinion or bearing,is there any play in pinion,Cheers Paul.

If you have had water in your diffs then the faces of the teeth on the crownwheel and pinion gears will be worn. A relap might fix but its likely you are stuck with the whine as long as you have that gearset. Check the gearbox and transfer for water too!

Man or auto? u got man or auto front hubs?

u may be able to unlock the fronts to narrow down the casue.

not sure if u can in the new soft vits

Might be time to extend your diff breathers.

Fair chance that you have damaged the diff. Probably worn the drive surface on the crown wheel and pinion gears. As said, might improve with lapping, or if not a new gear set.

diff breathers is interesting as most zuk owners know we have extended lines from factory diff breather kits are for nissan and toyota drivers but i dont know about the new GV.

The car is an Auto with Automatic Hubs ... Constant 4WD ... So narrowing it down is a little harder.

I'm hoping that there isn't any damage to the gear set ... The Box and Transfer Case were checked and they were fine ...

Hopefully it's just a bearing problem ... I'm sending it back to Suzuki on Tuesday.

I've already mentioned the diff bearings ... what else would you all suggest I get them to check??

The driver......what makes you think it should go offroad?

I am only guessing here, but it's not the tail shaft centre bearing? I had a noise on mine and that was the problem....but that was cause it was 16 years old...not cause of water. But maybe the bearing got full of sand/dirt ??

Hope you got some $$$, cause its not warranty either (owner abuse). Probably taking it a bit slower and seeing what your car can do is a better idea.

I wouldnt be too concerned, Just check your diff oil again in a week or two see what its like, they changed the diff oil but they probably didnt let it get all the water out the axels and stuff. Just let it take its course, maybe spend some money on your stereo instead

i have seen a few in my time, i have also owned a 97 coil sierra, 99 2L vitara softtop and the 04 GV i have now and all have extended diff breathers from factory

must be the antuqes that do not have them

The real ones dont have them. Didnt think that the coilys had them from the factory either.

If you can describe what they look like then I'l pop the bonet and have a look ...

one in the engine bay comes up and finishes next the radiator at the top on the drivers side, looks like a tube with a cap on it

if its a whine it could be a uni maybe

i know i had a whine an couldn't work it out .... was just about to pull the transfer case out when i relised that one of my unis cant move

I checked out the engine bay and couldn't see anything that looked like a diff breather ... I'll get under the car when the weather's better and look at the diff itself.

If there is just the standard stupid little valve, I'll extend the breathers myself ... probably with some air hose with a fuel filter on the end and mount it somewhere at the top of the engine bay ...

Will do the same with the rear ... just not sure where to mount that one ...

Any suggestions??

Just came out from under the car ... and I couldn't see anything

Even when on the jack, It just wasn't high enough for me to get a good look at the top of the diffs.

Plus, the front diff is up inside the frame ... so difficult to get at ...

I'm now trying to find something that will allow me to lift the car higher ...

Suzuki are going to replace the front diff internals on warranty ... but the parts need to be shipped from Japan.

So I have a two week wait for that ... then I need to take the car back to them where they will then drop the diff out and send it along with the new parts out to Suzuki's head office in Melbourne for the work to be done ... So I'll be without the car a week while they do that

Typical dealership these days, outsource all work like that. It used to be so frustrating having to wait for a diff to get done somewhere else, when it would take me half the time to pull the centre and rebuild it, then whack it back in. Its a shame that many dealership trained apprentices these days have never re-built a transmission etc, just pulled them out, and sent them away, then re-fitted them.

I'm going to check out my warranty documents to see if they are obliged to give me a loaner ... It's a crappy deal if I have to live without a car because of their piss weak parts and apprentices only trained to break down ...

Hang on. You are lucky they are doing it under warranty, Getting water in the diffs is an owners fault, and technically they do not have to fix anything under warranty. No diff is designed to have water in it.

Yeah ... I agree ...

But Suzuki's Head Office did say they would fix it a little to easily ... My guess is that there's an issue with the '06 diff that they know about ... but have decided not to do a recall for ....

They agreed to do it sight unseen even though the dealer had told them what happened ...
