ticking noise in 3L
my folks just bought a 97 hilux 4x4 for the farm and are too old and too deaf to hear the ticking noise that comes from the engine when it's under strain (ie foot down beyond the point of maintaining constant speed)
I don't know much about hiluxs as I'm a cruiser man but has anyway come across this before? - i realise it could be anything from big end bearing to speedo cable rattling and my description is pretty vague but it is only present when car is moving. So i can't work out exactly where the noise is coming from.

At first I thought it was a sea anemone, upon closer inspection I realised it was a funky ball of tits from outer space.
could be a big end, could be cam noise although they are usually pretty quiet in the top, could be as simple as a clutch release bearing going bad.
hard to diagnose if it's only there when the engine is working hard.
sorry that's not mcuh help, you haven't givena lot to go on!
cheers

I had a bad ticking noise from my 94' and it got worse after i had been in really dusty conditions. I popped the bonnet and I couldn't hear it as much so I went underneath it, and sounded like it was coming from the clutch. So I pulled the boot off for the clutch linkages underneath on the left hand side and sprayed it with water dispersent then lanotec replaced the boot back properly and it hasn't done it since. So it might pay to try that before you start spending too much money on it trying to figure out what it is.
Let us know how you go.

the engine sounds fine when not under load so i cant get under it or open the hood to pinpoint the sound. I might get someone to drive in low range with brakes on full to see if i can locate the sound.

+2 for a possible exhaust leak.
Have had several that upon load, would tick, both were manifold gaskets.
Remove aircon comp, and bracket, heater hoses, and move manifold away, clean off ALL of old gasket, and problem solved.
I have also found that injectors can also cause noise, but not affect performance.

I need to get my extractors miged up- the #4 cyl one has cracked and now it farts when its cold- not to mention my under bonnet temps have spiked by about 70 degrees cos im pumping exhaust gas into my engine bay!

yeh m8 i have a 94 with a 5L conversion, and i hade a wierd ticking noise under load, it ended up being a leak in the headers, just like a ticking noise at whatever rmp under load.. got faster as the rpm's got higher, is this like yours? if so get some extractors, fix the prob and get better go.. They usually let go underneath the part that bolts to the motor, so its quite hard to pinpoint it.. the exhaust bloke used a tube, like hose, and put it up to his ear to hear where it was coming from. Hope im of assistance.

Auto oil works best on petrols but i think deisles would burn it still worth a try i'll give mine dose at work tomorrow if i have time. i've seen brake fluid used at work cause a mean back fire but helped locate where head gasket was blowen. any oil 2T even give it ago if it smokes out of the exhaust it's fine if it comes out around manfold it's blown
plenty of parts on the bench
Chaps, I would not suggest using oil to find an exhaust leak.
All you do is make more smoke than a destroyer laying a smoke screen for a convoy.
Get a good light, and a mirror, and you will see where it s been leaking by evidence of diesel soot.
