You need to grind a new gate in the 2wd/4wd selector gate. You need to first take out the transfer, then remove the shifter. The way you do that is take the clip of and then the rubber boot, then push down on the retainer and turn it,it is spring loaded. Once turned the shifter should come out. the transfer should be left in low four before removing shifter. Then you look down the shifter shaft hole you can see the original gates for 2wd/4wd and 4H/n/4L. Looking from the rear of the transfer as it would be mounted in the car the shifter rod on the right is the 2wd/4wd shifter rod and the other is the 4H/n/4L shifter rod. The one we need to add the new gate too is the 2wd/4wd shifter rod . When in low four the 4H/n/4L gate needs to be marked directly accross from it on 2wd/4wd shifter shaft, once marked with a scribe or measured the transfer needs to be dissasembled. This is to enable us to grind a new gate the same size as the original gate on that shaft. There are springs and ball bearings that retain the shifters in place when selecting gears.

We need to leave the centre ball bearing out so that we can select 2wd/Low . On the diagram above it shows the springs and the sequence of installation of the ball bearings and springs. when re-assembly is done remember to leave out No-4 so that 2wd/low can be selected. The manufacturer puts this there and machines a slot on one shifter only so that you cant do what we are trying to do. Once the new gate is added clean all parts and re-assemble transfer,(leaving no-4 ball bearing out) also if you are adding gearing this is the time to do it. Once re-assembled
you need to take the gear lever, metal retainer and gring a half moon in it so that the shifter can move further forward, the half moon needs to go at the front of the shifter again lookig from the rear as if it was in the car,Hope this helps,I might have missed a few things but I'm shaw the boys will add there bits Cheers Paul.

im pretty sure u just remove the ball bearing, dont think there is any grinding involved.

Has anyone done the twin stick conversion? Did you have to remove the ball between the shift rods?
