disco diffs
Hey just a quick question
ive got a discovery with a 10 spline rear diff, how much stronger are the 26 spline rear diffs? im running 34" simex's and have found a cheap rear diff would it be worth it to put that in the back of it?
cheers

Well not really.... The Salisburys use the same size halfshafts so really don't get you much unless you upgrade the shafts.
Just get a 24 spline locker and aftermarket shafts and you will be happy.
And, oh yah Ben, 24 spline is 39% stronger than 10 spline.

Given that you are running 34s then YES. I have a shaved sals and 33's and I don't have any clearance problems.mroffroader wrote:basically im looking at it like this.....i may be able to get a sailsbury for quite cheap, it requires quite little modification to fit it and it is alot stronger than what i already havewhat do you guys think..... should i do it or not?
However - the guys down south who drive in muddy ruts all the time would disagree. So depends on how critical clearance is where you are - lots of mud and deep ruts like victoria???
John - The diff is HEAPS stronger, and that is where it counts. What is 6% between friends...

Well, expect for the pissy little shafts that I have seen break on a stock rig driven nicely...... There may be more work getting one in than the OP realises.ISUZUROVER wrote:John - The diff is HEAPS stronger, and that is where it counts. What is 6% between friends...
Then he still has a 10 spline front axle.
And thirdly, what is the point of 34" Simexs with open diffs, anyway....
Ben, didn't have enough money to make it all the way home?Perth, WA

True - I broke an (aftermarket) halfshaft on 32's withan open diff - but Mal said he didn't think it would happen with a genuine axle. Most of the failures in defenders have been due to the spline lubrication problem.red90 wrote: Well, expect for the pissy little shafts that I have seen break on a stock rig driven nicely...... Also plenty of halfshafts available.
Rome wasn't built in a day...Then he still has a 10 spline front axle.
MD lockers are cheaper for salisburies. And thirdly, what is the point of 34" Simexs with open diffs, anyway....
Decided to see what life was like over here "where the desert meets the sea" (also known as the most remote capital city in the world). The mining and resources boom made the job offers more lucrative than on the east coast - sure you don't want to come work over here for a few years??? Discos are MUCH cheaper nowBen, didn't have enough money to make it all the way home?Perth, WA

yes i have only just got the vehicle and the rear diffs are the most problematic i have heard so this will be one of the very early mods + that is another reason why i am doing the rear sailsbury as you can get cheap lockers......the point in running 34"s with open diffs???? im not sure myself maybe ask the previoyus owner lol........but this is all going to change
.......yes drive alot of mud and the tyre sizes are just getting bigger and bigger and the ruts deeper and deeper
.....i am only 15 im living in new zealand so $$$$$ is an issue so it will be another slow build for me

For the on topic portion of my postISUZUROVER wrote:MD lockers are cheaper for salisburies.

Will Mal do a 30 spline Sals locker and shafts without robbing you blind? Then it would be worth it.
I thought Mal was retiring and selling the business??
You never know where the job takes me. I wouldn't doubt that that job will come back to life......ISUZUROVER wrote:.........sure you don't want to come work over here for a few years???
Here as well. But I'd have to get an Isuzu powered 110....ISUZUROVER wrote:Discos are MUCH cheaper now.

There have been a few discussions about Mal doing 30 and 35 spline versions. Don't know if he has made any though. I don't personally know anyone who has broken a MD (HYTUFF) axle - even on 35" tyres. Ralph reportedly twisted one in his salisbury though. But he destroyed about 3 r&p's before he put the sals in...
Although the business is up for sale, no sign of him slowing down.
Plenty of work over here (WA) in oil and gas, and mining - you can just about name your price. You never know where the job takes me. I wouldn't doubt that that job will come back to life......
They are much cheaper too - a 110 county and a 120" ute sold recently for $4-5k AUD (each). Here as well. But I'd have to get an Isuzu powered 110....ISUZUROVER wrote:Discos are MUCH cheaper now.

There are 2 oz-built 110 countys living in Vancouver... One is owned by Ray Wood.

I know personally of 1 front broken on 32's in a rut, 1 rear on a Salisbury with 35's twisted and 1 rear on a Defender with Rover rear on 35's twisted. None of these have done a CW/P in the process. All locked.ISUZUROVER wrote:There have been a few discussions about Mal doing 30 and 35 spline versions. Don't know if he has made any though. What did Mal have to say when they were brought back to him? I remember you said they were fairly new axles so they couldn't have been the EN25 stuff. I would seriously suspect material or heat treating problems if the axles are breaking before the ring and pinions.Slunnie wrote:I know personally of 1 front broken on 32's in a rut, 1 rear on a Salisbury with 35's twisted and 1 rear on a Defender with Rover rear on 35's twisted. Is nobody running bigger than 35? A 110 should have 38s.ISUZUROVER wrote:There have been a few discussions about Mal doing 30 and 35 spline versions. Don't know if he has made any though. I guess the whole axle issue shys people away. I always laugh when I see people complain that you need to upgrade components. What do you they think "other" brands do. One of the guys I wheel with said he stopped counting the costs at $30k and that is just a TJ on 35s. But to stay back somewhere on topic....that same guy would tell you he would NEVER go bigger than 35s with even the best aftermarket 30 spline axles.

Micka was running 37"s on a 110 - either with stock axles or MD axles? Snarba was running similar on rangie 10-splines and 4.7 diffs!!!red90 wrote:Is nobody running bigger than 35? The haultech lockless 110 (now owned by Andrew e) competed in tuff truck with the toy/30spline conversion on 37's.
Most people I know are still only running 35" or smaller though.
All depends on how mechanically sympathetic you are...
Jacmac make a 35-spline conversion for the salisbury, and a little birdy told me that a small but very reputable US supplier will also have a 35 spline conversion - at very reasonable prices.
