MK Shackle Mounts
MK Shackle Mounts
Hey guys just a quick Q' Is anyone having trouble with broken shackle mounts on their MQ MK?? Currently i have just ground out the cracks and welded again. This is only every a short term fix as I think they can be inproved.. Has anyone got any suggestions?
I was think those shackles the unfold,, Grr cant remember who make them coz there bloody dear.. Well they relive the spring as it flexes stoppin undue stress on the mounts and shackles. Any input appreciated

I got some "after market" shackle mounts off Michael at Superior, they have a larger bush which allows for a little more flex, but they are solid as a rock, more beefy then the originals. I got them welded on the back, as I did a leaf flip, by a boiler maker and I haven't had a drama. Mind you though I haven't put many K's or hours on them, so time will tell but I am confident.
As for the they drop shackles releiving stress...They allow for more flex by being able to twist and extend, by the idea behind them, more flex I would have to say no, it won't releive stress on your front shackle mounts.
I assume your talking about the fronts as the rear's mount through the chassis

ive had 2 that have had cracked.
My shorty just got belted into place and rewelded and had no probs.
My LWB is a work in process and the mounts were cracked very bad. I cut them off and will rewled and plate them and run the superior mounts due to being a rubber bush and not a pita metal one.
If your worried, brace it up with 2 piece of angle iron trimmed to suit and then reweld the mounts on.
Cheers

Not mine, they were telling me i had to get custom rubber bush to work with my near orig susp.mattstar wrote:Superior Engineering use polyurethane bushes, not rubber which is better anyway, its more durable
Cost me $10 a set from supercrap, just need a trim due to length. easier to replace when they wear out and should flex more than the old steel bush
"run the superior mounts due to being a rubber bush"
I was mis-lead, my mistake just wanted to clear it as Superior's products are top notch! not rubber from supercrap.
What was the problem, just curious as I have an MQ chassis but wanted the superior MK shackle mounts due to bush dia, I got around the wider bush by using MK shackles with the leafs. can you explain?

I have to weld and brace up my chassis where the mounts are, its so bad that i need to cut off the old mounts and brace the chassis.
SO, rather than trying to save my old ones, i decieded to grab some superior mounts as i didnt have time to make them myself.
Using rubber/neo bushes instead of the steal bush, means cheaper, easier and hopefuly more off road friendly whle hopefully not loosing too much on road handling.
They are a very solid mount, The sales bloke was insistant that a custom bush was needed to run std leaves/shackels. I told him that they are an off the shelf item. In the end he sold me what i wanted am i am happy with them so i dare not to complain.
I hope i have cleared it up for ya.

i welded mine up 2 years ago, its had the cr@p thashed outta it since
and it isnt showing sign of cracking again (well yet any way). i havnt added any gussets or bracing either
.

mq shorty, black, rust free!!, quarter chop, F&R tube bars and sliders, q78's or 33'' stt's, 4.88's with lsd waiting to be thrown in.. :D http://www.patrol4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9540
longer shackles do not reduce the stress on mounts what so ever.
they actually increase it. and "wacky shackles" are even worse.
just think of the basic leverage principals. you have a longer lever therefore more force.
just buy the superior ones and plate the sides up if your not 100% confident in the strength of the chassis

Jup, welded mine up about 3 years ago, was that cracked, the whole mount came off the chassis. Had to drive home very, very carefully. No dramas though. Previous to that i never even checked them.
Grind off any of the rust like a bad man
and weld the puppies back up.
