I've got a HZJ75 with a 1HZ , Turbo and intercooler. Goes fairly well, but want to ditch it and get something with some bigger / safer potential. Been doing some research into engines and was originally going to go for a chevy. However after alot of calls and internet time, it would seem they are very over priced and don't have that much going for them. They seem to have lots of "issues" and bottom line don't come close to the power and torque of say a 1HD-FTE.
Here lies my problem. Seems to be a few articles on converting 80's etc but nothing on 75 series. From the looks of it the 1HD-FTE is going to be a challenge due to the electrics and computers etc. The 1HD-FT however seems to be far more straight forward.
Has anybody done this conversion? If I was to purchase a 1hd-FT new from Toyota are any of my 1HZ bits useable?

Don't want this to be a debate over my chevy is bigger than yours etc. Maybe someone can turn me to the chev. As mentioned however on paper it would seem they fall off the pace. For instance Safari claim 171kw and 500 and something Nm of torque out of the 1HD-FTE which is 40kw more than a 6.5 turbo chev, and considerably more torque. Those chev figures were quoted by Brunswick Diesel the other day.

75 series ute. 8 inch lift, Drop shackles, Shock hoops, ladder bar, Ubolt flip, 3 inch wheel spacers, intercooled turbo, winch, twin detroits, 35" Mtr's, etc, etc.
I just got my 1HD-FT fitted into my SWB 70 series on saturday. Its been a while coming as I've slowly been doing up the engine prior to installation. I plan (one day!) to do a bit of a write-up at some stage.
Bottom line is, the 1HD-FT fits, can be plumbed up fairly easily with only relatively minor mods.
It wont have quite as much power as the 1HD-FTE, but is alot less complicated. that sits well with me.

The hdfte from a 79 wreck will bolt straight in if you get the wreck and all the ancilaries....the 4wd wreckers at Archerfield qld have been doing these for a while......check out pickles.com.au for a damaged one....heaps around.
The hdft will bolt straight in with no wiring changes...havng no glow plugs, you will end up with some extra wires...
Hard to find under 7k secondhand, and i strongly suggest you buy whatever with gearbox, as yours will fall out under the stress of it all...but dont worry, they also fit, because the fzj75 has thesame box as does the hdj79

Thanks for the responses. I was told if I was going to do a Chev diesel that the 79 box was a weak link and that I need to keep the 75 box? In other words when they put chev's in 79 series the box is replaced with a 75 version. Or is that incorrect?
