LT230 transfer advice

LT230 transfer advice
Okay unfortunately my transfer has been cooked so need a replacement... it is in a '96 fender running 33's (thinking maybe going 35's).
What advice can you offer... as with most here, I am strapped for cash... currently been quoted 3500 installed for a new one (supposedly) but a bit wary as the price seems to cheap.
Any suggestions on what i can do cheaply (but still strong) to help with ratios etc for better low & high?

So the 3.32:1 low isn't low enough?
A decent 2nd hand t-case is only $500 from a wreckers.
But the best option would be to get yours rebuilt, and in the process fitted with either of the MD low range gearsets. The gearsets are about $1900 I recall. So that and a box rebuild should easily be possible for $3500.

Low range is the same in all. High range varied with vehicle. 1.41:1 in Tdi defenders, anywhere from 1.003:1 to 1.22:1 in the rest. (there was also a 1.67:1 but this was in the 2.5P/D 110/90s which didn't make it to OZ).mud4b wrote:so there are different ratios in lt230 cases depending on vehicle?

Actually, the 2.5 Petrol came with 1.4:1, it was only the 2.25/2.5 diesel that came with the 1.6:1. Also, isn't there a 0.9:1 that was used in the autos? AFAIK the tallest LT230 ratio is 1.003:1 - was fitted to OZ 110s with 4BD1/LT85 and "high compression" rangies (auto and manual ?).
Tallest LT95 ratio is 0.998:1 - again fitted to some rangies and 4BD1 diesels.

I had mine done thru MR automotive.
They also machine out the outputs and steel sleeve them to stop the output flanges becoming sloppy. I supplied the single piece cross shaft from jac macs and they supplied pretty much the whole internals as they were all to far gone from the last centre diff going south. They were pretty good on price as well. I think it was about $1400. Not to bad since everything was pretty much new.

Sounds pretty good - $1400 + $1700 for MD gears. A mate mentioned he had his defender T-case rebuilt by MR as well, can't remember how much but he was happy.nottie wrote:I had mine done thru MR automotive.

if yoy go to look at a LT230 how can you tell the differance between the ones that come out of a disco and the ones that come out of a defender???
im looking at one a which has HRC 42 stamped on the back of it but it doesnt ring any bells!!
also what kind of reduction do the MD gears have and where would i inquire about them???

So what's the usual timeframe before a R box starts to give trouble? Mine was secondhand and in unknown condition. It has a quiet whistle/whine that sounds a little like a boost leak.cloughy wrote: Your welcome

Is it possible to swap the high ratio gearsets across from the 1.003:1 R box to the 1.2:1 T box?
I guess since anything is possible, how many parts will I need to modify or make?
Got hi range: 1.2:1 ratio with 30% maxi rock crawler LT230RC (rock crawler. I love saying that). Whine in 5th is really sweet (and loud) Welp, I love the whine anyway. I try not to do it too much - reckon it might overload everything a bit too much.
Difference between defender and disco transfers is pretty much easiest to tell from the serial number. Got heaps of info somewhere laying around.... PM me if ya want the ifo. I'll have to go looking for it.

The whine (more of a whistle) is there in all gears from about 30km/h up. I don't have a rover gearbox either, but the noise wasn't there in the 1.2:1 LT230 I swapped out.Reddo wrote:Whine in 5th gear is normal as far as I know, and can be made worse by the gear stick and boot/tunnel sealing arrangements.
