Jackaroo problem on hot days.
Hi
Was wondering if anyone out there can help me with a problem I am having with my 2000 3.5l V6. I recently had cause to rebuild the motor (tried to cross a deepish water hole for a photo with no snorkle. oops #6 conrod...) Fitted rebuilt motor to jack and as the hotter weather is now upon us the motor is 'surging' at around 2500 rpm onwards. It was so bad the other day (approx 29deg day) that my wife was not able to get it out of second gear. I took it to Holden and their tester came back with no faults logged. I was/am suspicious of a sensor failing when it gets warm, O2 temp or air flow, but as the computer is not logging a fault I can't be sure. I have also been told it may be the computer and to locate it and try putting some insulation around it.
Any thoughts would be appreciated

Computer is in engine bay so heat may be affecting it. BUT - i have seen and driven many jacks on very hot sumemr days (35+) and not had a problem, so i think it may be elsewhere. When the Holden dealer checked it, did they take it for a drive and take a "snap shot" of the motor's readings from sensors etc when it was surging. The TECH 2 diagnostic computer that they will be using has this feature, and if you know what you are doing you can inteperate the readings to get an idea of what is going on. Sounds like they just drove it, checked codes, and let it go.

The guys at Holden drove it the next morning, once the weather had cooled, then put it on the tech2. As the problem was not there I didn't expect much from them, which is exactly what I got. The next time it happened they would not send anyone out as the car was about 20 - 25 mins away from their shop but told us to take it to them. Shame it couldn't be driven that far. I guess I will just ahve to wait until is happening and tell the other half not to drive it far when it is warm..

It's been a while since I put up this post and I am still having problems on 30deg plus days. It has happened a few times since and the last time the motor started hiccuping at 2500-3000rpm and could not get revs any higher until I was in 5th doing about 80kph, and had to start dropping revs due to hiccuping when the motor stopped running. I turned the ingnition off and back on and the motor started again. ( This would have been a 40deg day) About an hour later I took it for a drive and every time the motor reached 2500-3000 rpm it started hiccuping and then started doing it at lower rpm. I could overcome it by cycling ignition on/off until the next time I let revs get up to 2500-3000rpm. The hiccuping is not dissimilar to cross firing of cylinders. One time it happened I limped to the dealership with it happening all the way but after stopping the motor for about 5 mins before taking a mechanic for a drive it stopped doing it. The mechanic at holden thinks it may be a coil pack but I am not convinced as it only ever starts playing up at 2500-3000rpm and on hot days and can be overcome by cycling ignition off/on. Does this RPM signify anything? Also on a colder day there is a small hesitation at this rev range (similar to another thread I read where it was an air sensor at fault) The day the engine cutout I did not notice any lights or indication up on dash (although I was a bit preoccupied with working out what was going on and getting my 2day old daughter home) I have not been able to get it to the dealership since for another diagnosis but any thoughts on the matter would help.

Do you have another mate with a jackeroo V6 simillar year model. If so, swap the inlet pipe from the air box to the throttle body, air flow metre included. This will allow you to check if it is you intake air temp sensor(little sensor sticking out of the inlet pipe) or your air flow meter.

did the same holden dealership do your engine rebuild. Sometimes it's "funny" that they can't find their own mistakes. I had a 2000 V6 Rodeo that used to drive around here at plus 40 days poking around the property at walking pace with no problems at all.

Check all your fuel supply lines.
I had a fuel problem caused by bad fuel, which blocked the in-tank gauze filter and the normal filter.
On very hot days, the fuel return will drop on top of the Gauze filter location and cause any blockage to worsen.
You can check fuel delivery by removing the return hose under the car, and bridge out the fuel pump in the fuse box - from memory, 15 seconds should deliver at least 300ml of fuel but you can check with the dealer.
A new pump is $115 from Repco, but the tank has to be dropped to fit it, a pretty easy job as I did it myself. Mine was delivering about 120ml of fuel before the new pump and 600+ after.

I replaced the fuel filter and could not believe how dirty it was. Checked the fuel flow and had about 300ml/15sec prior to replacing filter. After replacing had about 375ml/15sec. I checked the workshop manual and it states that out of the filter the flow should be at least 380ml/15sec. Would you recommend replacing the pump? The next day after driving for about an hour it started doing it. We were on the freeway doing 100 in fifth and tried accelerating. Pulled into a servo, stopped motor and all o.k. again. Last week my other half drove at night for about an hour and it started to do it again, and it wasn't even a warm night. Whenevr this problem is occuring and the car is turned off I can smell 'rotten egg gas'. I have been reading on a USA site where a similar problem is experienced due to the EGR valve sticking, but they are coming up with the fault code where I am not. Any thoughts???????????
