Vitara Won't Start

Post by rosie »

Gday all,
I've just been cleaning the Vitara after the Wedge trip and have come to move it and she won't start. It is turning over quite freely but refuses to kick over.

It was running perfectly for me this mourning and up to about an hour ago but wont go now. I have tried inox on everything and am at a loss as to what to do.

It's a 1992 JX G16b if that helps

Any Ideas or possible problems would be great, thanks, Ben

Check you haven't got water in/around your dizzy and plugs. Also check your leads haven't been dislodged (pull 'em all and push 'em back on firmly).

Can you try roll starting her?

I tend to leave the engine running if I'm cleaning the engine, just make sure you keep the water away from the air intake.

sparks the easiest, pull a lead halfway and check it arcs out somewhere to ground.

fuel, u may be able to here the pump working from the back.

Check ur fuses also to be sure.

if you want to hear for fuel just put the ignition on and listen for a little hum coming from the rear where the tank is. try some start ya bastard up the air intake.

I can hear the hum, it's at the back of the engine and can only be heard when switched to "On".

Aero start produces a few revs but it dies after about a second.

I am getting a spark.

Also, I can't work out why it was happy to go only about 2 hours earlier and after stopping it won't go.

Fuses are all fine but the hum keeps humming and doesn't go off. It has always been this way thou as far as I can remember. I copped fuel from a jerry can in it two days ago, is there a good chance that a bit of shit from the can has come through? It was fresh fuel but the tank from the outside looked pretty average.

Would this cause it to die once shut off though?

unless it blocked the filter, maybe but unsure. no error codes coming up.

also is the airbox and wires connected. mine wouldnt start unless the airbox was connected and also the little black box on the side of the inlet tract needs to be there as well.

just the check engine light which always comes up on startup. The airbox and all are still there though and the cables plugged in.

If it runs on aerostart then it sounds like a fuel delivery problem.

Well RAC just cam around and I'm up for a fuel pump.

It's the in tank one that's gone.

How do I get the pump out of the tank on a LWB Vitara?

I can get a Repco one for staff prices but aren't too sure on how i will go at fitting it.

Thanks, Ben

need to drop tank unless there is a panel in the rear floor for access.

basically undo all bolts then carefully drop down and undo all connections

Well pumpis fixed! I had do drop the tank and tow hitch but it wasn't too hard overall.

I can't believe that there are open power terminals in fuel tanks. How don't these cause a spark if they ever come loose or something? I made sure they were tight but was a bit worried about putting uninsulated oints into petrol. It went in the same as it came out though so it must be safe.

Thanks for all the advice, Ben.
