Internally or externally sensed alternator????

Post by want33s »

I have just bought a Projecta 120A dual battery isolator to help charge my winch battery. Upon reading the instructions it says:
"Suitable for Vehicles with Externally Sensed Alternators only, otherwise you will need to use a ELECTRONIC type ISOLATOR".
Is a Suzuki Sierra alternator externally sensed? Is EF falcon? thats what I'll be upgrading to soon (well maybe?).

Hi want33s, that’s a diode type isolator and in this day and age is about as useful as tits on a bull.

There is anything from a 0.3 to 0.7 of a volt drop across these type of isolators, which simply means, unless you can increase the voltage of your regulator, you are most likely never going to fully charge your batteries ( if you can charge them at all ) and even if your regulator is running at a slightly higher voltage, the voltage drop caused by these types of isolators will mean that your batteries will take much longer to charge than if you used a solenoid type isolator.

Cheers.
