Injected 5 litre in a GQ?

Post by GU BUG »

Yes I know I know, it's been discussed before....but if we done a search evrytime we wanted to know something, there wouldn't be much left to talk about.

Turbo diesel is my number one choice but I like to keep my options open.
I'm contemplating the thought of putting a EFI 5 litre in a GQ. Thought about the idea of a gen3 but knowing all the dramas that have been had with the gen 3, I thought maybe the 5 litre's the go.

What mods have to be made?
What's the round about $ for the whole exercise?
Any other bits of advice from someone who's done it would be great.

Cheers
Joe

OK I fitted a VN EFI engine and Turbo 700 auto to my GQ SWB when I had it. I used the Marks kit and also his EFI adapter loom and speedo sensor.

You need a HQ - WB type sump with the bowl at the rear. I tryed using HQ-WB engine mounts but found the motor didn't sit right so I ended up using standard Commodore v8 mounts , they are the same from VB - VS but VN owards have extra welded plate inside for better strength and to stop cracking.

Used standard VN alternator bracket and alternator. Used VN v8 Power steering bracket but modified it to take a VS V6 Comodore pump and used a remote reservior. The normal v8 pump hits the GQ steering box. I used the standard v8 Pulley on the V6 power steering pump.

Exhaust - I used standard VR - VS CAST type manifolds and the factory engine pipes and modified the rearmost section of the engine pipe by cutting the S section out of it and getting it expanded back to a round shape and welded a 2.5" flange to it.

Used a B&M Megashifter as a gearshifter.

I also got rid of the standard GQ radiator and run a HQ 3 core Air-Cond radiator. I rubber mounted it and never had any over heating problems

Thanks Shane.

Why would you go the gen 3 bartso? Not getting enough poke out of the 5.0L ?

How thirsty's the 5.0l? Obviously depends on how you drive them I know but I'm looking for a 'best you'll get' figure.

Thanks again guys :)

I no longer have the 5.0 litre GQ , I traded it on a 2001 VX SS with the Gen 3. After owning the Gen 3 for 3 months now , If I was to do another GQ I would fit the Gen 3 without thinking about it. The Gen 3 has so much more power than a std 5.0 litre (165KW VS 220KW) and fuel economy is great. I was getting around 300 - 350KM to a tank with the 5 litre in the GQ. I was running a non lockup torque convertor after having shudder problems with the factory lockup type.

The Gen 3 in a Commodore gets around 400 - 450kms for 65 litres depending how heavy your foot is.

i put the 5.0 Litre out of a VP commodore in mine.... all up, it cost me about 8 grand to get it running, including engineers cert and exhaust. If you want to fit a GENIII i think it will cost you extra because you have to swap sides with the starter motor. I fitted mine up to the Nissan auto..... and it runs ok, you will have to set up your TPS properly though so you don't fry your transmission. The adaptor kit, not including the tacho adaptor, cost about 3 grand, and that includes the H/P fuel system, engine mounts and mount plates that will need to be welded in, and full harness adaptor. Unless you are planning on drag racing it, the 5.0 litre will do fine...... and you can spend $280 on a knock sensor and a HSV chip and it goes well.
