Auto Servicing intervals????

Post by TassieTroll »

G'day all

I have a 1989 GQ Patrol with the old Nissan 4 speed Auto.

Have had the box rebuilt about 3 years ago now as the Torque Converter died sprinkling metal shavings all through the box, this was within 6 months of purchase! Damn!

The guys who did the recondition said that I should be having the Auto Serviced every 10,000k's. I think this is a bit rich. The log book (still have the origional) specifies 40,000 for Oil Changes on the Auto (the origional box lasted 140,000k's so I don't really trust the manual).

I have now done 22,000 since the last Auto Service and the oil looks like it's just been put in there, no burnt smell, nothing.

I am thinking anywhere between 20 and 30,000 for the Auto Service. But wherever I go I get quotes ranging from 10,000 to 40,000.

Need advice! How long can modern oils last in a GQ Auto!

Thanks

considering its round $3000-4000 for a rebuild, regular servicing is cheap

the mort important part of the service is the oil.

Have them, put the nissan RECCOMENDED oil for the transmisisonm, not the cheap chit they put in.
99.9% of the tranny guys put cheap oil and not the proper oil.

If your oil has a nice red colour.you only need drop the 3.5litres outa the sump every year or 10k. Buy a decent Dexron 2 or 3 . Remember the 3.5 litres is only part of the capacity but is all you will remove on a drain.
You are merely diluting the old oil with the fresh stuff. But that`s ok if your oil is red. At those intervalsyou wil be overservicing it slightly.

mate i rebuild transmisions at work. we recomend an oil change every 40-60k if somthing has failed in 6 months it has more to do with a component failure or a mistake has been made during the rebuild procedure. flushing the oil might prevent the amount of metal in the box but its not going to slow the compont/componts putting the metal their from failing, maybe if there is signs of abuse they could tell you they wont cover it.... BUT that said with transmisions there is now way to tell if it has been abused in such a short time, coz everything will look new. if frictions and bands had been burnt it could be put down to simply being incorrectly adjusted
