Ok whats the go? Are they able to be mounted on the roof or not? I have heard they are illegal (depends on the state) but i see them quite often mounted on roofs. Does it matter if they are mounted on your roof rack or on just a custom bar?

i got a roadworthy from kmart auto for my 80 series and i had 4 hella roof mounted spotteis mounted on it in qld. they are legal if independently wired to a cut off switch so you can use high beam without them. i have been pulled over many times and have not ben hassled or booked cos of them but if you do its your bad luck i guess

You're better off having them easily removable anyhow, or one day in the forest the koalas might steal them when you drive under a low branch
That's the main reason i sold my roofracks, couple of good tracks i wasn't able to drive cos of height restriction.
As for the law, i don't know. But there's enough of em around without canaries slapped on their windscreens to make me think it's either legal or rarely inforced.

I wouldn't think so... As they are supposed to be on a seperate switch to your high beam, it makes them hard to flick off when an oncoming car appears.tuff4runner wrote:is it ok to use them on road at night

Roof lights are good for seeing further yadda yadda. But on road if you come over a crest in the road the car, truck etc will see your bright and annoying roof lights (thus blinding hte driver) Before you even know their there.
Its also illegal to have incorrectly and /or any light that dazzle (or some word like that) any other road traffic.
Anyway search and someone has listed in one of the threads the direct link to the QLD TPT and Aust ADR requirements.
I would find and post but cant be arsed and will fit them anyway and use accordingly ie off-road or miles from anywhere.

Front factory fitted ones I can live with, as most are aimed low. But theres heaps of people around Bendigo, fitting them to shit heaps and there aimed all over the place. Also there just fitting driving lights but they think cos they mounted them under the bumper its ok. So if they can sit there with there driving lights on at the lights oppisite me. The rear fog lights are worse. Get them all the time and they are such a distraction.

Now the only restriction is you are allowed a maximum of 3 pairs of forward facing driving lights. So for my HJ60, I have 2 pairs standard, so the set on my bullbar brings me up to maximum.
Ive asked a QLD transport officer this exact question, and his reply was that the legislation was omitted (didnt know if it was deliberately removed or some asshat forgot to include it), and now they cant defect you for it, unless you have more than 3 pairs of forward facing driving lights.
