Down under transfer to 1UZ-FE adapter

Post by jafa »

I'm trying to gauge interest in a duel case adapter for Hilux/Surfs
How many of you Toyota drivers out there would be interested in buying a kit, very similar to the famous Marlin Crawler kit, for around $650 Au. I am looking at doing a run of about 10 but need to know if I can sell them. They will be cast alloy and CNC machined. Might also do an additional kit so you can use forward shift boxes for both.

Also in the pipeline is an adapter to go between the Toyota geardrive transfer case and the Lexus auto trans, so you will have Lexus V8 and auto ----> Hilux/Surf geardrive transfer, anyone interested in this also? Please note for you diehard Aussies, these will be made in New Zealand :D

Let me know what you think

both these sugestions sound great to me. although i still havent committed to the 1uz swap, the lexus auto to gear drive transfer has been an issue for me. Tthe marlin adaptor for the same job is about AU $450 plus postage, and thats if u already have the right 23 spline (AU $200 marlin) transfer input shaft.
As for dual tranfers, who doesnt want duel transfers! But at the moment (as i understand it) its either cut another hole way back in the tunnel for the 3rd stick, or maybe pnumatic ram? (This itself would be pretty cool).

I would make the Lexus addapter first. You will sell this everywhere. The guys in the states would buy these faster than you could produce them. Its also the only reason i wouldnt concider the Lexus option in a hilux. Its a PITA to put an auto behind them. Yes there are adapters but they are way over priced.

The Transfer addapters you will sell them but your trying to get into a pretty saturated market. Price isnt everything to everyone. Reputation means a lot. I generally buy on Reputation not price.

I'd be very interested in the transfer case adaptor too. The older I get the lazier I get changing gears, specially around town. Could just about convince me to do the 1Uz swap. Please lets know more about the price.

Hey thanx for the replies guys, seems the Lexux adapter is generating a bit of interest, I'll start work on it immediately and work out a price.

83 Lux, thats not a bad price for an AA Adapter, I presume you can get a Marlin, or Trail gear one even cheaper as they reatil for less in USA or is that from an Aussie dealer?

One suggestion is to include a provision in the addapter to fit the speed sencer into it.

I had planned to include it as I want to have the thing running as stock as possible, i.e the simplest install

This kit will be for the A341 with the donut style output shaft not the slip joint style (which I think is the crown one), basically will be a alloy housing and a 23 to 21 spline adapter, mebbe a 23 to 23 spline adapter as well. My first one will incorporate a PTO unit as well, but not the production ones unlkess that is something that people are keen on.

Ok got some pics of the Lexus adapter design, those who are interested, let me know what yoy think of the design. It will bolt directly to the back of the Lexus A341, you will need to cut the thread of the output shaft of the trans.
It will have a double row bearing that the spline coupler runs in and a new speed sensor trigger. A Lip seal is behind the bearing so trans fluid dosnt leak out into the adapter, and an o ring inside the coupler. i will be designing a version of this that has a PTO unit incorporated in it that uses a synchro hub out of an old transfer case, more of that to come
I'll post up a little program tomorrow that you can download so you can view it like its in the cad software, ie you can section it, spin it and hide the individual parts, make them transparent etc

Looks great to me. And having the bearing there is an awsome idea. Any ide how the length of this set up will compare to say a 22R,5spd and transfer? Just trying to get an idea on if the transfer needs to go back further.

looks very good to me, would be a very sale-able item i think. also if you did one to suit the soarer 1jz or 2jz supra transmissions, which i beleive are only slightly different, would prob sell a few of them aswell.

Any ideas on what sort of dollars we would be looking at yet???

*jz autos as well, good point, anyone know whats differnt between them and lexus A341? Hopefully just the tailhousing which I throw away anyway, mebbe different output shaft. As for price, still in the middle of costing it all up
