i usually just go to a 4wd park as they have both camping and 4wd tracks to suit what you want to do.
then once a year do a big trip to the cape /simpson etc

The Great Escapes magazine is a good place to start, then try the Dirty weekends book (South East QLD) for even more ideas.

There are a lot of good 4wd parks that are only a few hours drive from Brisbane and all have some good camping, driving and some Swimming holes as well. I havent done much in the way of National Park driving but i beleive there is also some of this up around the sunshine coast hinterland.

Frazer,Morton Stradbroke Islands maybe or just a run up to Double Island point. Watch Mudelo Rocks around near Rainbow if its not clear to get around them. I had prob been around the rocks whene there was water on them 50 times with no problems then i got stuck and lost a Turbo Deisel Patrol there.

As Troy said the Dirty Weekend book is a great resource for places to visit.

2nd vote for the dirty weekends (se qld) book. An excellent resource for someone starting out. It contains details of all the 4wd parks in QLD and northern NSW as well. Gives you a difficulty rating, estimated time to do the trip, camping spots, history of the area, permits needed if required...can't recommend it enough...

Depending on how far north you want to go, try Kin Kuna NP between Woodgate and Bundy, on the beach at northern end of Hervey Bay, or Goodnight Scrub, between Childers and Gin Gin, on the Burnett River. A little further north gets you to 5 Rocks, about 40km north of Yeppoon.

  Yeah good one POS!

This mythical region does exist, but I'll deny any knowledge of it's whereabouts - just like proving grounds... ;)

Everyone knows about Ormeau? There's a story about how it got called 'Area54'... some tosser even made a video about the zone...
