Q for rebuild parts td42
Q for rebuild parts td42
hey all, i am going to do a rebuild to the 'ol girl after 625,000 wonderful k's, nothing is wrong with the engine, i am gunna add a turbo and have a bit of a play with it.
any way i am after a good kit for the motor TD42, my plans are to have the head, pump rebuilt , get block cleaned , all grinds etc. i was going to add a good set of forged pistons and molly rings.
but i just wanted to know what path others have gone down.
i have a kit here that i bougt off a mate,an axt comp kit.
cheers

You need to decide your eventual outcome with the motor and build around that, ie 100 rwkw, 150rwkw, 200rwkw.
All these dictate different levels off engine pump and turbo rebuilding.
I dont know of any off the shelf forge pistons for these either.
Maybe you can let us know.

well i was going to be aiming at about 130-150rwkw, i didnt think this was too over board, but i dont realy want to hinder engine life with power. i know that the two dont play very good together ( power vs reliability) but i want to have a good kit. i wasnt sure about the pistons but i had a mate that had a gq with 138 rwkw , the motor lasted about 5 months and he melted a piston.
You have some decisions to make. You can have reliabilty and power if done properly and monitored.
Your injector pump is only good for making 8o- 90 rwkw with any aftermarket turbo, late factory GU turbo td42 pump is good for 130 rwkw after some minor mods and matched turbo.
140 + rwkw requires major pump mods, correct turbo matching, i/cooler sizing and engine mods. All this does not come cheap.
Hope this helps. If you have any questions call me, only to happy to help

i been considering the posibilitys for when the day comes mine needs a rebuild.
i have been considering head work n a cam. but i also dont want to have an engine that only makes it to its first major service. id like to see a good couple of hundred out of the motor
any advise on what bits to use and what combos work

Any engine will respond well to head porting and camshaft changes. What items work together depends on what power you would like.
We can now easily get 130rwkw out of factory turbo gu td42 engines. Best to determine power requirements then build to suit.

I rebuilt my TD42 at 550,000KMs. I rebuilt it with standard parts then added a Safari Turbo just after covering 10,000KM's. I ended up using standard size pistons, liners, bearings etc and new camshaft and timing gears. Had cyl head rebuilt with new precomp chambers and valve guides etc. The most difficult part is replacing cam bearings in the block. I had a shop do the cam bearings and cyl head and ream the gudgeon bushes, but did the rest myself. The total cost ended up being around 7K. The parts are relatively cheap--the most expensive bits were cyl liners at $183 each. Machine work added a bit also.

Nasty troll,
we have ony tried one grind as an experiment, this was on a landcruiser of mine. Limiting factors are deck height and valve spring design. On a patrol its a lot harder to change cams. I dont know of anyone who has done it yet, but I will be in the future, as soon as the negine has to come out.

mate of mine did cam n head work. ran a standard gu turbo and it spooled 17psi from 800rpm to 5500rpm
im not sure of the specs but i do kno it hauled ass, made about 1200nm of torque and very low in the rev range.
only lasted 15000kms from a full rebuild tho:(
im unsure as to wether it was the way it was built, specs or the driver as motor was swapped for a gen3 before it died
id love the same sort of power but am very sceptical on life of my engine if i do so as 15000kms is just to short of a like span
