Can Alloy Rims be repaired?

Post by amshaw »

Im looking at buying a set of 2nd hand Alloy rims.....But at some point when on 4x4 the wrong nuts where used or nuts became loose and now stud holes are elongated on one rim, ie because of nuts being loose the holes are now wider/bigger

Can they be repaired to a safe normal drivable level? If they can be repaired do they just shim up or alloy weld something else in the stud holes?

Also any idea who may do such repair's in Vic, or better still Country Vic (West)

Thanks for any idea's
Andrew

I've had alloy road wheels modified (and later repaired) by a mob in Slack's Creek (Brisbane.) They inserted seats to suit tapered nuts, and later removed a couple of dents (after I was shunted off the road and rolled the car. )

The wheels are on my current car, and still going strong.

I think these guy's re-rolled and straightened out a couple of Globes for me a few years ago... Hit a piece of train line laying on the road. They did a top job and even polished the rims to bring out the original shine... Wasn't cheap but was cheaper than new rims at the time.

This info came at a good time. As I have a mate that cracked a Walker Evans Beadlock the over day.
So will pass this on.

G'day All,

Thankyou very much for all your advice, contacts & comments.

Ive decided that Im would not be happy knowing Ive got a repaired rim, but worse if something went wrong while my wife was driving.

Plus not Legal in Vic to use alloy welded repaired rims anyway :?

Also being from where Iam its just not cost effective to get it repaired ie Postage, even if I bought the whole set cheap, just not worth the hassle when I can buy a brand new set for $600inc, nuts, caps & fitting etc (not for Disco but Rodeo)

But thanks anyway guys, I did at least learn something today
