you simply push the 4WD button on the transfer shifter. The small gear stick will have a red/orange/green (cant remeber the colour) button on the side of it, thats the 4WD button.

not sure if they are the same as the early 90 hilux's with auto hubs, my mate had a problem with his where the vacuum pump/lines to the hubs were stuffed, maybe check that out

Are you sure. As I had a gen 2 4Runner and mine had the buttin on the small shifter. And every surf and runner I know off (and thats alot) all have the ADD button on the small shifter. The ADD have no lockable hubs the are auto. Unless of coarse the are poverty pack (no offence) then they will have lockable hubs and just the shifter for high and low.

When you select low, no matter what it will activate 4X4 no matter what.

No, he has a 4Runner auto that uses a different auto and transfer set up than a manual 4Runner/Hilux or Auto Surf. They do not have any electrical buttons etc.

To select high range you pull the smaller auto lever straight back. To select low range you pull it back, across and back.

What do you mean by not locking in low range. Does it lock in high range ?. Does the green "4wd" light come on in the dash ?

You are aware that only one wheel will "lock" in both diffs unless you have an LSD or locker etc.

the front does not lock at all , the light on the dash does not come on, with the car jack up only the rears spin when driving

You ADD system is not working and the most common problem is a vacuum leak, so first off check for air leaks at the hose connections on the actuating solenoids located on the inner left guard, their connections at the diff and at the vacuum tank under the front left guard etc.

If they are ok then you will need to check on the 4wd electrical system.

Even the auto runners have the ADD switch to activate 4X4, unless they are pov pack then they have free wheeling hubs. Which have to be locked in to engage 4X4.

Are you saying you have neither one of these on your truck?

I cant see how it can not have one of these two.

If you have ADD, and you select low it should automatically lock it into 4X4 and the light will be on your dash.
If it is not ADD you have to lock the hubs and then select your gear i.e. High/Low

NO, they don't and no auto's come with freewheeling hubs.

4wd is selected by just pulling the smaller 4wd lever into 4wd high or low range. They still use the ADD system but the required signals come from moving the lever, not via a dedicated button on the lever like on the auto Surfs and manual Hilux's as they use a completely different transfer to the auto 4Runner.

All auto 4runners use a hydraulic operated transfer with its own oil pump, valve body and oil cooler.

I shall take your word for this as I have never seen this before. Mine was a manual, the only autos I know are surfs and they do. Havnt looked in an auto runner yet. I just assumed they would be the same as a surf.
