Hi all
My 3.5EFI in my 88 classic dropped a valve and is generally all round shithouse.
I have another engine under the house from a 77 2door.(fit EFI manifold to it)
My plans are to re-ring, big ends, hone, service the heads, fit new cam shaft, fit the EFI manifold to it AND Megasquirt it at the same time.
My question is what cam should i fit and/or where should i look to find out?
I want the engine to pack some punch(3.5..LOL) when needed not too concerned with efficiency.
Have been toying with the idea of throwing in a EFI holden v8 and Marks Adapter kit but decided against it due to the much larger cost for engine(with loom and ECU) $1500, plus adapter kit somewhere above the $1000 dollar mark.

How much were you expecting the 3.5 rebuild to cost? the above option will probably end up not much more $$

Well i have been thinking about that time and time again.
Im still trying to find out all the prices. so i may still holdenerise it :P
5ltr holden would be a huge jump in performance and not much if at all worse off fuel drinking wise
I'll be doing any work myself(& mates) so will only be parts(except heads).
Cam around $250 less if i just go for a standard 3.9 shaft.
Heads reconditioned at around $150 a piece. $300.
Full seal/gasket kit ??$200??Guessing here.
Lifters $25 each. $200 total. So I've read while searching in another Outerlimits thread.
Rings and bearings???
Will swap the dissy over for the electronic of course and water seal it while its out.
So around $1500 maybe more for engine rebuild plus megasquirting.

rebuilding a Rover motor prperly isnt going to be cheap, certainly be comparo to say a Holden V8.
rebuilding the Rover will be easier in that it wont need to be cetified and all that and changing this that and the other. Ypu also have to take into concideration what conditionid th Holden motor in as well, will it need work doing?
May be concider getting a a really good 3.9 and all the ecu and wiring. I bought one a few months ago.

I reconned a 3.5 EFI to fit in my Stag a few years ago. I have a book on modifying the Rovers and I ended up with around 190 HP (engine) from the standard 145HP. The Vitesse motor had around the same, so I tried to do everything similar to that. Vitesse valves, flat top pistons, about $500 spent on the heads (porting and polishing). The cam was from some country town in NSW, I've forgotten where and the brand (may have been Waggot). This could be the only thing i am disappointed with as there seems to be an inconsistent idle problem which has been diagnosed as the cam. I should have gone with a Crow cam or something similar.
If I was to do it again, I would get a 3.9 and do similar mods, because the EFI system in the later motors is more sophisticated and the end result I believe would be better. A chip for the ECU would also be the go.
What I did though I am happy with and it wasn't all that expensive. If you want further details PM me.

Engine parts don't have to cost the earth. Suggest maybe look at importing from the UK on some things, but be careful as some items which may work out by the time you add exhange etc.. to the cost won't be much cheaper than buying the parts here in Aus.
Re- Cams. From experience and I have done it, fit a stock cam if yours is running the std crap EFI system or you'll have all sorts of tuning issues. I could never get my old man's 88 Rangie when he had it to run right once we did that (always sounded like it was missing, dunno) .
Holden V8 conversion, not a big fan of them myself and not satying there not a good thing either (I'm a bit of a purist) but if the costs work out the same or a bit more, maybe worth considering
