HOLDEN V6 PROBLEMS

Post by goannaoffroad »

Nothing to do with the 4x4's out the back,it's the other half's VR Berlina,
When I first got this car 3 years ago the crank angle sensor shat thy self no big deal fitted a new one then after driving at 100 kmh for 20 mins's or so the 'check eng' idiot light would come on for a couple of minutes then go out ,I'd check comp' code and it would be clear .Then after a few months it started to get a flat spot while doing a U turn or going around a round about, which would scare the Bejesus out of the missus.
I kept checking thing's with no luck ,then it sometimes would not start just crank and crank, didn't matter if the engine was hot or cold then the idiot light stayed on extracted code and it was "no signal from crank" so fitted second crank angel sensor now idiot light has started to come on for a few seconds again and the other day the f%$@er would'nt start.I've fitted a few other new electronic ignition parts out of hope but the problem remains, fuel pump test's ok ,balancer is fine etc etc .
Any one got any clues seeing as these are a popular motor in Hilux's and 4runners I thought some may have had a similar problem.

Not too sure, could it be bad earth, the V6 in the Hummer replica had some problems with not starting, just cranking, then it would just stall for no reason, It would start again straight away, sometimes stall again, sometimes run, we traced it to an ignition earth that was loose and was covered from veiw by the rubber inner gaurd, took out the screw and bolted it in, no trouble since, but thats my story, still not too sure about yours

The plate under the coil pack is the igniton module. The module recieves a signal from the CAS (crank angle sensor) aswell as the ECU (computer) If the module has a bodge trasnistor in the CAS ciruit it will cause a no start fault, it can log a NO crank signal code and it can drop out momentarily on decel. Your sysptoms point to a fault in the module HOWEVER, It's your call wether or not you replace it on a whim.
If you're confident that the CAS has been fitted correctly and your not losing fuel pressure then this is the next thing in line of common faults i'd say.

If you have replaced the CAS twice in a short period check theres no oil leaks .

They dont like oil at all, I have destroyed about 6 or 8 CAS because of tiny oil leaks.

I replaced the ignition module with a new one just before I did the last
CAS. The car had a tap on the nose before I got it and I'm wondering if Mr Panel beater has dodgied up the loom or something ,every thing looks right but look's can be decieving.

Could be right.. It may be time to seek some professional help. You'll need to connect it to an oscilloscope and check wave forms from CAS, ECU and module when it wont start to see where the problem lies. Radomly replacing parts may work out to be far more expensive.
Have you test for spark, injector pulse and fuel pressure at the times it's not starting??

we had one similar at work recently, it ended up being the DFI module (under coils) and it had just been replaced not long before.

other common prob is the plug on the DFI, we have replaced heaps. you can buy the plug from holden, which comes with about 30cm of harness, you will need to cut the wires going to the DFI plug and solder the new ones on.

Is the remote in good working order? Does the security light go out when it is cranking, and not starting. 9 out of 10 starting problems from VR to VY is the remote not working properly, the reader (the ring around the ignition barrel) not contacting the key, or BCM problems.
The key fault can also cause it to cut out while driving, as can the CAS. The CAS fault will take a few minutes to restart, while the key fault will restart immediately.

Also, if you drove thru a puddle, the engine light can be triggered by the O2 sensor.
