I know this has been done before and Ive spoken to 2 blokes in Qld that have done it with Manual nissan boxes.
ANyone done it anywhere else?

Ive come up with the weight of a SR20DET would be too much and compared with the HP (close to CA in stock form) and $$$$$$$$ its not worth it.
CA18's are often on ebay and nissan forums for well under $1500 bucks (sometimes under 1K) and are only about 15-20kg heavier than Vit 1.6 and a lot more torque/HP!
This maybe similar $$ to doing a Vit 1.6 swap, just three times as much work with having to widen the tunnel, run a auto trans cooler, etc!
But as fas as I know you have widen the tunnel to get the vitara auto in anyway, plus run a cooler, plus move the trans case back??

I know I sometimes struggle to get this point across, but, here goes....
What do you hope to achieve with this much HP in a Sierra? There is no way that a Sierra has the chassis dynamics or stability to be able to make this a usable conversion on the road, and as for off road.... unless you are planning a hefty wheel base stretch and some very large tyres, I can't really see you gaining much capability over, say, an EFI vitara/4 speed auto.
A member of the Suzuki club here in vic fitted a N/A SR20 and auto into a LWB sierra (fully engineered). As I understand it, you would be far better starting with a LWB if you want to try and get an auto in. This member had the SR with a manual in a SWB and it was pretty hard to modulate the power offroad.
This car has a donaldson type airfilter and endless air as well as large shock mounts through the inner guards. It is a VERY tight fit. The added pipework of the turbo would be a major challenge.

I would be surprised if an engineer would pass this conversion - 45 to 140odd Kw would require very significant upgrades in soo many areas.

i think the reason hes going the ca instead of the vit+auto is because of the outright buy price of the motor, i hope your handy with a welder/wiring diagram because this conversion isnt going to be a piece of cake.

So rather than go thru the junk of getting a turbo engineered on a 1.6 Ive asked the engineer about using a stock ca18det.
He told me in stock form its no probs to engineer because of emissions etc and far easyer and cheaper that engineering a 1.6 vit with turbo.
Half cuts for Vits are from 1500 to 2500 and ca18det is exactly the same price wise and very close to same weight as far as I can figure out.
From what I can tell the 4agze is heavier by about 50 plus kilos but just as cheap. But its not been ruled out for now, just a lot harder to engineer according to the bloke ive been talking too.
The zuk I have is running Bundy diffs and 32's so drive train should be OK, my mate has 1.6 turbo and regauly does winch challange etc and hasnt broken anything in 3 years.

I have a ca18de in the 413 at the moment . not bad , only wanted more power lately as its not running to good . I will bolt the turbo on thius winter . I have a nissan nivara gearbox behind it so the front shaft is on the l/h side . Bit of a hassle but sorted not . Its a trailer queen so no cert issues .
You can put a rb25 gearbox output half on a ca18 box to shorten it up , alas that is manual only , not sure about an auto . Would like to go to an auto thou . kepp us posted on what you end up doing .

Hey putting a ca18 in a zook makes them one fun car to drive around. MIne is only a ca18de and its got heaps of power and turns the 31 a lot easier than the 1.3. Ive got mine in a zook ute and mine is a 5 speed manal. If u need wireing done and some other pointer pm me, as ive had mine going for over a year or so and i drive it every day. I want to auto when i put the motor in but there wasnt any around. The tunnel would need some slight massaging to get the auto in as the 5 speed only just clears.

hello rob you know what i have to say as we have spoken before, as for the ca18det a lot of work, a lot of money, alot of time, and a lot of fun .
It has pleanty of torqe as i dont need low range no point as long as i dont let it boost up, but dont compare the conversion to a vitara, i did, totaly diferent all the plumbing/intercooler for the turbo$$$$.
As for the auto use an auto from a TURBO vl commerdore jatco 4sp and a bell housing / fly wheel from a pintara ca20. its all interchangable and it will be a vacume controlled box, that come shift kitted standed only need a switch for over drive easier cheaper, if you use a ca 18 auto they are full elec need the computer to suit and forget shift kitting for under $2000 because it has to be done through an after market computer.
and i have 2 turbo jatco 4sp boxes sitting in my shed!!

Im still thinking and getting info about this. I like your idea of the VL auto im guess they are not only cheaper but prob nissan boxes anyway as the VL had the nissan motor.

No im in ipswich about 1 hour from briss QLD. Ive had the car going for over a year and it the best thing ever. There is no reason that u cant run the standed ca18 auto. It may be powered bye a computer but there cheap as chips as everyone want the manals. One of my best mates is into doing all the wire harness for the motors and making the autos work. Ive got mine in a LWB ute as well.

But I am just wondering why you are specfically wanting to put an auto box in with the CA18DET?
I have always preferred manual, and I always though manual was better for 4wding.... then again, I have only been 4wding myself for a year or so, so I may be missing something.

WITH A MANUAL YOU NEED TO RIDE THE CLUTCH AND TRY NOT TO WHEELS SPIN WHEN YOU ARE GOING OVER REALY ROUGH TERRAIN OR IN MUD / SAND THE TIMES WHEN YOU NEED TO GO SLOW

As rama said the ca18 have plenty of power and the auto would make the hole setup. But mine is real fun with the manal and u just keep pulling the gears and it pull real hard. There a lot of difference between the vitra and the ca18. THe difference in buying the motor and hole setup is hard to compare. CA18 is the way to go, it may be a little more work than the vitra but there desinged for a turbo.

So how hard is the install of a CA18 (non turbo) how many mods are needed IE engine mounts .. not fussed about auto or manual.
Just for bombing about forestry roads etc. How well on stock gearing will it pull a 31 or 32 at the very outside.
Would like a little more power than a Vit 1.6 and I will need to replace the gearbox anyway as the Zuk I am looking at the gearbox is getting a bit sad. An it is fun haveing the gocart type feel of a pretty stock Zuk with a decent bit of poke.

i have just bought my new suzuki and as soon as i have the CA18de rebuilt i will be starting to put the motor in my suzi,

Dunno bout his, but i put one in a swb a few weekends ago, engine mounted, wiring done, engine running(roughly due to no intake piping to propely locate the AFM(had to have it duct taped to the throttle) and vac leaks).
Took about 6-8 hours of actul work to get it to that stage.
Managed to get it to sit under the bonnet no body lift, this will mean the trans tunel will need raising to have the transfer and gearbox outputs straight.
When i get a few of my tools back home i will go about a proper gearbox mount and mount the transfer case, make the jackshaft.
Still got abit of thinking about the cooling system, would like to use the stock ca18det radiator, but i havent measured up the space properly yet as their are other things to get done b4 then. And i have the front clip off atm.
