hilux- aftermarket turbo
gday guys
well last few days had heaps going through my head and i got thinking i might keep my lux and put a aftermarket turbo kit. now i have a couple questions
2.8l diesel hilux 92 model 220,000k's on the clock. been serviced every 5thosand k's
- is it worth the money and what am i looking at roughly?
- what would be the best kit to go with and should i go an intercooler?
cheers jack

- what would be the best kit to go with and should i go an intercooler?Intercooler is good but a lot of work to fit. I would leave that till later and concentrate on things like a bigger exhaust first.
cheers jack

Do it right the first time and put a good kit on it don't be botherd with a ct20 now thta being said i've only driven on with this fitted and i reckon mine which has extractors fitted would blow it away just put a DTS kit on a mates picked it up for 1200 bucks 2nd hand slaped it on and it boggies (as much as a 2.8 can) think there just over 3G fitted and dyno tuned
plenty of parts on the bench

This is the cheapest way to do it and you will get decent improvement. But an after market kit designed for the 2.8 will go a lot better.sniper wrote:mate get on toyota surf forum and buy a CT20 of a surf.

And Sic Lux i have driven a few 2.8s with the CT20 on them and heaps of 2.8s with extractors and there is just no comparison. The 2.8 with a CT20 will kill any 2.8 non turbo. Then its always possible the one you drove had major problems.
yeh i dont think my 2.8 with extractors has got anything on a turbo hilux no wmatter how crappy the turbo may be. if i do it think i might do it right the first time and put a new system on without the intercooler (maybe a future mod)
- wat exhust system would you guys reccomend? i have a 2" exhust now but id assume that id need 2 1/4-2.5inch?
cheers guys

Thats why i said that i've only driven that one and yeah thats the first thing i thought when i drove it that it has major dramas. Drove it and thought it was stock lifted the bonnet and seen it had the turbo there tight arses that own it so that explains alotRUFF wrote:This is the cheapest way to do it and you will get decent improvement. Hi. Turbotech fitted a Denco kit to my 2.8 (done by previous owner) and the quality is great. Goes well too. Located in Ascot according to receipt.

Well... i reckon its good but it's a rebuilt engine with turbo pistons etc so no reliability issues.. I'm happy with it pushing 35's.
It's either 2K for a bought full aftermarket kit, much less for a surf setup, or wait til you can afford a 1UZ conversion at around 5-6K with more grunt.. and they sound pretty good.. go where the heart tells you.

5-6k is pretty cheap for a a 1uz i thought it was more around 8-10k?? thats the thing stool not sure what i really want. if i go the turbo route i will be getting 35's and a fornt or rear air locker not long after hopefully. 35's will just be the weekend warrior wheels.
diesel handle the watre better then then the petrol engine. imkind aleaning towards the turbo ad it cheaper and more convienient.

Dust water vibraions and computor only sould like trouble to me stay the diesel efi is great on street cars but they still play up not just the ecu but coroded terminals/conectors are they main things that play up add water and dirt to that and i can see it not being to good when it does play up.
But hey i only play with the stuff all day

Turbo kit for 2.8
Ring Bill at Turbo tech for a price. With turbo tech they will set your car up properly on the dyno and the 2.8 responds really well to a turbo not only power wise but normally better fuel economy as well. Mind you they are pretty busy. The Denco kit comes with a schwitzer turbo and is a good kit for the price. The Axt has a garret turbo but all the ducting isn't as neat.

I ran a schwiter turbo on mine @ 10psi and mine was quick enough for a 2.8.
You couold run them @15psi but thats where it will get scary for your bottom end. 12psi is the max I would boost a 2.8 too. 10psi is safe reliable and I got around 650km out of a tank on highway.
But still the cheapest and still a great option is the CT20 from a surf. Only reason I got a schwitzer was I got it at the same price I could get a CT20.
It depends on how much you want to spend. I personally cant see the extra $$$ in an aftermarket kit compared to a cheap CT20. But thats my opinion.
