LN106 Diesel breaks cooling fans

Post by LUX90 »

My hilux seems to break a blade or two off the cooling fan every year or so. Ive replaced the fan a few times and it still happens. I have had a look and cant see any reason, i havent done any water crossings, its not hitting the fan shroud, i even tried removing the fan shroud.

I heard somewhere that you can fit a cruiser fan to it and it stops breaking fans and helps the cooling as well.

Has anyone heard of these issues and if theres any common cause?? and anyone know what fan fits?

I fitted a cruiser fan (it has an extra blade and is shaped alot better)to my '93 LN107 3L no probs ,but the engine has since died  so I haven't determined whether it's made any temp difference :?:

Happend to a good mate on aust day weekend it ate the radiator then (not repairable) so got a brand spanner fan and rad fitted it, not long after it ate the new one but not as bad so it got fixed now it's getting the thermo fan treatment got to go do it today. Is there any play in the vicous hub (alloy bit that holds fan to water pump drive) also has it been roled or pranged also what fans are you putting on it 2nd hand, new aftermarket or genuinne. Also do you have body lift.

Fans are new aftermarket units and the viscous hub is brand new aftermarket as well. No body lift fitted either. Bit frustrating spending 50 bucks on a set of blades that dont last very long.

check the fluid. there is a few different fluids for them. also check the theromstat on the front of the hub. it may be a case of the thermastat is making it lockup at a low temp or the fluid is makeing the fan work to much. the fan simply could be stuck on permantly which can break blades at high rpm.

I know the fan isnt stuck shut as you can turn it by hand when the car is stopped. Yes the fan used to hit the top of the shroud but i removed the shroud and it has still managed to do it again. Is it worth throwing a 16in thermo on there with a temp sender in the top tank and forgetting about it

there must be a clearance issue, either the eng mounts flex too much or the motor is making too much torque, either way the fan is moving to the top and on the passenger side and hitting something....id be looking at restraining the drivers mount to only moove so far or doing something with the fan length...maybe mount it on the engine side of the hub instead of up front...something along those lines....bugger it....get a shorter stem from something similar, like cressida, 3f, 1fzfe, 1hz, ,etc etc ...

Cant mount it engine side of viscous hub and if you want to mount thermo fan with no body lift a 16" fan will hit ballancer mounted in the middle and mounted high as possable will give about 15mm clearance (not much)
so we went high as possable on brackets and 2in cab lift and all seems to be good with engine fully loaded up. Will post picks tomorrow when not sooo pissed
