Are they really that gutless?
Or are they just gutless/slow compared to the turbos etc.
I need a big car and I am told the 100 series is the biggest (width) wise out of all the models. However I cannot afford the 4.2TD. I only really want to spend around $20Kish. I will generally only be using it in around town (Karratha, WA) and the frequent beach tracks/runs etc. looking for fishing spots carting the 3 anklebiters and Missus along. In the not too distant future will be towing a small boat. Lets say no more than 15/16 Ft.
Will the standard get me buy? What is its fuel efficiency? Any suggestions?

Standard 100 series

Mate I just bought a 2001 (105 seriers solid axle,100 is IFS) paid just under $30,000 but it had less than 59,000k`s . Its a 4.5L petrol auto. My 1st petrol in about 15 years.All I can say is going from a 2.8 Hilux to this.The cruiser is a missle .It will tow my road race bike in the trailer loaded with all the gear (approx 550kgs) and still do 110kph up hill ,plus a little faster on the straights and it made no diffrence to the usage of fuel last week end I still manageds to get 480k`s out of the main tank.
From when I was looking around thier is very little Diesels little lone Turboed models here in Newcastle and Central coast (I know your in WA) but the price they are asking for the ones that are out their,probally better to look at a petrol

I gather you a talking about the 4.2L N/A Diesel (1HZ).
It all depends what you want out of it, if you want a good reliable donk then they are well proven in that department.
For work i drive a 78series Cruiser ute with the 1HZ, personally i think its gutless let alone in a full size wagon, my 60series TD would run rings around it.
This is what i think:
Bad things:
* An Absolute slug, a million times worse with a bit of a load or towing
* Dies up hills unless you come down a gear or 2 and get stuck into it
* Fuel economy isnt great, reason being im forever up the thing for the rent to get the tiniest bit of perfomance out of it.
* Overtaking cars on the freeway can be a challenge

* Reliable
* Temp gauge never moves no matter how hard its working
* Once up and running will sit on 120Km/h (until you hit a hill, then you gotta start all over again)
But mind you with saying all that all they need is an aftermarket turbo, exhaust and, a bit of fuel pump work and they are a pleasure to drive.

Ive had them as work cars.They went better than I thought and kept up with the traffic
fine and sat on the freeway fine.For a standard car they are tops off road and I wouldnt hesitate to tour in one.Not sure on the towing side of things but over all they are a great car.The ones we had were brand new not sure what an older one would be like.

I got one. It was standard when I bought it and I tow a work trailer 850 kgs every day, uphill. You could say its very slow without the turbo, so slow that you could walk faster when towing uphill, but after a little $ at Arb a denco was installed and I get one extra gear out of the old girl going uphill. Without the trailer it's a rocket with the turbo, without it you could say SLUGGISH.Gazza!

Mate has one and is pretty happy with it ,yea a bit sluggish but serves the purpose ,he got his for 24k with 220000kms in Perth( no ser history), dont think long term heavy towing is a good idea as i believe they have a prado box, I seriously looked at them but ended up buying a 97 80 ser multivalve t/d with 130000ks for 35 k, which was around the price for a std 100 with less than 100000k . Whack on a turbo and you have a nice rig that should last a while though...
