The 4.2 I6 in the 100 series has 150kw and 430Nm
I know the same engine in the 70 series was detuned but I don't know the figures.
The 4.5l V8 in the 70 series has the same figures (151kw and 430Nm).
The europeans get more than that from a diesel half the size. There's gonna be a lot of potential for aftermarket tweaks for one.

I've driven the single cab. Was very disapointed in performance, expected a hell of a lot more grunt out of the V8. Didn't get a chance to line it up against our 4.2TD 79 and 100 series but I'm pretty sure it would have got spanked. Inside is virtually identical to 79. The only thing I noticed was the "idle up" switch tacked on the side of the dash. Under the bonnet is neat and tidy. Intercooler is friggin huge!
Oh and the front track is about 4" wider than the rear.

How does a brand new vehicle that has the same/more torque and power output than the previous model (and it comes on earlier in the rev range) get spanked by the older model vehicle? Maybe my tester was a dud. Maybe the motor was still tight and would loosen up in time. But I dont think it has anywhere near the claimed output. I do think it has oodles of potential though.

I think you will find there is an agreement in Japan on how much power & torque they allow to produce.
Much like the Supra's & GTR's in standard form only put out 203kw but a little external fiddling & exhaust mods produced remarkable power figures 300+kw , It's going to be unleashed by some tune up shops for sure but the factory trucks are not the fire breathing monsters I was expecting. I was beside a Troopy ute the other day and the sales guy gave it a boot full at the lights and it didn't scream off the line like I expected it too. Should have seen the face of the potential buyer in the passenger seat when a Surf towing a big trailer kept side by side with it .

Funny you mention this agreement. Even though they say they limit them to 206KW, i have seen dead stock GTR's fresh off the boat pull dyno figures that make a mockery of that agreement. I though the limit was only on petrol vehicles? May be wrong though.

Although there may be no limit on torque output, the quoted torque output may also have to be reduced to correspond to the fakie power output (or vice-versa).

Had a quick look at one at Nunawading toyota today. (4door wagon) I liked the size and the no frills interior- no airbags!
I wasn't wrapped with the build quality though - rearmost window seal rubbers were badly installed and the whole car felt a little bit cheap.
It's a shame there doesn't seem to be an auto, even back in the '80's you could get an auto Middy petrol and turbo diesel. I would have thought this motor would love an auto.
I imagine they will sell well. there isn't really anything else like it on the market, if you rule out a defender as too quirky and underpowered.
for my money though, I would go with a diesel/auto LWB Wrangler rubicon.

The G400 CDI cannot be built RHD as the steering shaft would foul one of the turbos. In fact, the G400 CDI requires scallops in the chassis to clear the motor

Three door G-wagens were available from day one.
