just curious what side is the weaker,

i would be thinking the short side, but not sure,

I seem to break the longer side slightly more often; about 6 times compared to 4.

I would think that the long side would be weaker because it has more leverage on it causing it to twist easier.

i agree, long side, but id also say if you setting up a spares kit for comps throw in a pair of rear axels, as i snapped one at tuff truck on the weekend

long side is stronger coz the longer axle gives more torsional loading before it breakes there is no leaverage as the axle turns, I would say anyone breaking more longs then shorts is loading up the long side more.
I've done 5 longs, 7 shorts, 1 each of corefeilds then changed to GU n done 1 auto hub changed them to manuel hubs then no drama's in 4 years

yah GU sounds like the way to go,


$1500 or so from the front diff? sounds like it will end up saving money.

you need to change the whole front end to a gu unit you can use the gq centre n hubs tho, its a bolt in swap easy as

I did 2 shorts to 1 long, short side tended to take the bell, long side tended to strip the spider out

from talking to various people the long side SHOULD be a little harder to break because the length of the axle allows a little take when loaded, but at the end of the day the slock loads is what kills CVz so any decent bouce at nopice etc will kill either side pretty easy really
