350 sbc goin in a GQ Patrol
350 sbc goin in a GQ Patrol
Started putting the motor in today, cut the old mounts off the rails and now making sum new ones up. I have a 168 tooth flywheel, does any1 know what size clutch this uses? reason i ask is that the disk supplied in the bell housing kit matches the wear marks on the flywheel but is smaller diameter than the original nissan disk. Can anyone shed any light on this? also dellows say use existing slave cylinder yet marks 3x3 say use standard on a 153 tooth and a smaller dia on 168 tooth. Delloes dont even mention the different size flywheels?
Turns out the sbc that came to oz were fitted with a smaller flywheel and clutch disk, the yanks had the bigger one, as my engine only recently came from the states it had the bigger one on it, so matched up a new standard GQ disk with a larger 11inch pressure plate. Engine is mounted to the bellhousing waiting 4 me 2 make the mounts up. Yes i had 2 "massage" the firewall but not much. Near the drivers rocker cover and the are behind the dizzy as i have a hei big cap dizzy.
Not much 2 report, rang dellows 2 ask if the bigger 168 tooth flywheel and clutch would fit and they said no problem. I fitted the bigger flywheel and clutch and guess what, it dosn't fit intoi the bellhousing! Had drama's with dellows stuff on my last V8 swap and when i informed them they buried their heads in the sand! I can fix it i think by grinding a small amount out of the casing, will let u know how it goes.
Ok, its in, had drama's with engine locking up when doin the bellhousin bolts up which turned out 2 be crank hitting the end of the crank and the clutch disk centre hitting the gearbox front cover tube where the input shaft comes thru but nothing a grinder didn't fix
Just doing all the modifications now to the hoses etc etc. Have taken sum pics and will post em up, do u have to have them hosted on a website and link em using img? as i can't c an upload pics button?

Ok took sum pics, will load em 2nite, almost ready to fire up now. Anyone know anything about rochesters? Setting them up etc? Also there is a thing on the drivers side of the carby like a small drum with a take off for a small dia pipe, i presume this is a choke and where does the pipe go to?
There are quite a few takeoffs on it compared to the holley, the canister needs to connect to 2 of em, one full manifold vacumm and one partial vacumm but as for the rest?????? Anyone help?

A speed camera would have prevented that!
Found out u just loosen the 3 screws and turn the choke to open, well it's all up and running and has done nearly 70kays, all good apart from 1 oil leak which is coming from the front somewhere. Standardf rad was flushed and altered 4 chev motor. With twin thermo's on, it runs nice and cool but will have 2 c how it handles it on the beach! Get the motor run in and we'll c! I will say tho that even tho i'm keepin the revs down at the min u can defo feel the power differance, it keeps up with the flow of traffic without effort unlike the old motor which u had 2 hammer 2 keep it up with every1!
i want to see the pic matedemo2 wrote:Ok took sum pics, will load em 2nite, almost ready to fire up now. Anyone know anything about rochesters? Setting them up etc? It goes so much better than the old 6, was a fairly easy conversion too, tighter fit than the 350 in my MQ but its 5 inchs narrower inbetween the chassis rails. I put a 351 cleveland in aN MK and that was tight so a clevo in a GQ wud be real tight.
Need to get the rev counter converted now 2 read right, was handy readin high when it was being run in. Done about 3000 kays now and it needs a test on the beach

I'm doing my homework (again) on fitting SBC to GQ. GM made the alternator fit everywhere over the years so brackets are easy to find to fit it in same spot. Isn't there ones for the ps ans ac in the same spot? There is one for the compressor to go up where the ps pump is. Could that be an option? Could a different pump and compressor be used? I've got a few Commodore bits laying around that would be good to use. Why use the block huggers? Nothing else fits except custom? Wouldn't the ramshorns have fitted? These questions aren't just for you either, anyone feel free to add info. We're all reading this thread cos we're wishing it was us.
can i use a mate to position while i screw?
I made brkts myself as im a firm believer in not buying something if something can be made or adapted to fit. It only took about 2 hrs 2 mount everything woth the engine sat on the garage floor. I used block huggers as they were only $199 new off ebay, i have an MQ wiv a 350 in it and that has a rams horn on one side and a normal manifold on the other so i guess it wud fit GQ as well. I've only just found out the ramshorn has a bigger outlet than the normal manifold so odd manifolds aint doin my MQ any favours, more expense, lol
