diesel running on

Post by bogged »

anyone got ideas what can cause 'running on' in a diesel??

EG turn the key off, and it tries to shut down, but does it very slowly..

also check in the intake pipes for any oil. if its been overfilled with oil they can blow enough through the breather for it to run. same goes for worn turbo seals.

when my bat terminal jumped off the bat, i couldnt turn it off either, took the key out and gave it to my mate in another truck and kept driving just for the sake of it :P, turned off as soon as i re-connected the terminal, so prehaps ya fuel cut-off is getting no power ??

macca81 if it were a mq you could be correct. but on a mq the solinoid is open when no power and closed when power
on a gq/u its the opposite so if he had a flat battery or no -ve it would not run at all

also on a mq you can manualy open and close the solinoid on a gq/u you cant (as far as i know)

my guess bogged is the cut of solinoid is not completly closing. it is common for them to either only half open or half close
as id doubt you car has enough k's to have issues with burning its own oil and from memory you dont have a turbo to have blown seals in yet

i guess you could diagnose this by unplugging the solinoid while the motor is running n seeing what happens :P

the shut off valve only closes a 1/3 of the way, how can this shut off air supply?

It may act as a restrictor, but not a dead shut off. This vehicle is also fitted with an immobilser unit over the stop solenoid. Cant remove the solenoid without removing the injector pump, the immoboliser unit has shear bolts clamping it on.

I just picked up a GU ute today & it runs on REAL bad, say for about 15 seconds :?.

It's a 99 td42t.

Could this also be a fuel solanoid prob or some thing in the pump. The guy I purchased it from said it had something to do with the pump but he never had it checked out.

Any ideas???

was askin bogged what car he was askin about. all of the resopnses are relative to you. it could be somethin in the pump also. the whole injection system relys on break off pressures, if any related component is worn then it could allow fuel to keep flowing thus the car would run on.
dont tell the missus
