problems, early ones had the oil gallery problem the patrols had. however since the new block came out they are reliable.
turbo is not water cooled so be wary of any that have been driven hard and not cooled down.
the injectors are not repairable, exspencive to replace. the pump is a bugger to repair.

biggest problem is often the electronics. we have had TPS failure and EGR valve problems. however the EGR is easly blocked off. if not blocked it soot up the intakes.

however imho the single biggest problem is the lack of maintance and poor/cheap oil being used on them. i guess that is why very few people come forward with maintanice history on failed motors.

personally one big hassle i have come across is they are touchy to being overfilled with oil.

biggest drifference between normall and comman rail is fuel injection pressure. higher pressure means better fuel spray which means they can burn fuel well even at low compression. that way they can drop the compression to allow for higher boost which means they can burn more fuel to make more power. the navarra 3.0 dosn't have comman rail but i think it has higher than normall fuel pressure.
