can you do this?
ive heard of kits that you can get that let you get rid of the balance shaft chain if you balance the crank.

what are the pros and cons,

as ill will be rebuilding my engine later this year and im slowly gathering all the bits (crow cam,webbers etc)

The driver's side shaft spins in the opposite direction to the crank. This direction reversal is done by a set of gears, which are used as the engine oil pump.

When you remove the balance shafts, you need to do something to keep the oil pump working. This is what the kits do - they typically supply something to replace the balance shaft, so the second gear in the oil pump has a shaft to run on. You also receive a short chain to drive the oil pump, and typically some other stuff too - can't remember what.

Yes, it's a good idea to balance your bottom end before you remove the balance shafts. I've also been advised to improve the induction system, so ALL cylinders receive the same amount of air and fuel - e.g. twin sidedraft Webers :armsup: or a multi-point EFI system. :cool: This (theoretically) helps to keep all four cylinders creating equal power impulses - although I'm not sure how the balance shafts would help to correct for this anyway.

Note that the balance shafts spin at twice crank speed, as they're intended to remove second order harmonics. Balancing your engine CANNOT fully compensate for this, so there will be an increase in vibration. But those who have removed the shafts don't find the vibration to be a problem, so don't let that stop you.

hey i dont know the ins and outs of this but when i had a new oil pump + timing chain put in i found out mine had no balance shafts and my paj doesnt seem to have any added vibration or noise.., only from noisy tappits and broken exhust mount from my prang haha.., but thats another story....

I've had 2 2.6's now with the balance shafts removed and the bottom ends balanced and it was definatly worth it, and neither of them seemed to vibrate much,...

also the first one had twin webbers and went hard.. (was in a drag car with nos b4 i put it in my ute)
and i injected the second one and that was pretty good too

due to the response ill be doing this mod, however seeing i still have to have the car on the road to get to work/uni ill hunt round for and engine and rebuild it on the weekends, as i have access to a fully equiped workshop and a bloke who rebuilds vw bugs to run 9's :D

how much do you reckon i could pick up a good motor to do a rebuild on?
