GQ Steering box Q

Post by baggers »

Hi all, i'm looking for some help.

I replaced the steering box on my GQ this morning, all went well, but now the pump is making an whirring noise, sounds awful, last thing I wanted to hear after working all morning on it.

My old man suggested bleeding the steering box (I thought it kind of self bled?), and so i've made a mess with shooting air out of the bleeding nipple on the steering box but the noise is still there. Is it damaging anything? Fluid level is fine, I made sure the oil didnt get contaminated.

Would really appreciate any help on this guys and girls.

Often the new fluid airates when the system has been opened and refilled, let it sit overnight and try again, with luck it will be fine.

Nope, no luck.

The box was leaking on the way home, and I didnt notice for a while, could it have run the resevoir dry enough to make the pump shit itself? I wasnt making any noises before I changed the box over though.

Perhaps I just bled it incorrectly...

Try jacking the front wheels up & turning the wheel lock to lock about 10-15 times with the car turned off then turn car on & do the same .

I think thats how you bleed the buggers . Worked for me

Might be a stupid question but what's the bleed nipple on the steering box for?

Does this help in bleeding.

Thanks for the replies.

Nothing seemed to work. Took the pump off, and the noise was still there!!!!

It seems, by coincidence, the aircon compressor bearings didnt like being submerged then sitting there for a week without being run again.

It seems to be the when the compressor is not engaged and free spinning on the belt that it makes the noise. The AC has never worked properly anyway so i've booked it in to get it all looked at.

Thanks anyway guys
