MK T130 transfer issue
MK T130 transfer issue
Hey guys. I was usin lowrange around the yard today doin some ramp work and when i've got to go out of low range, it won't budge. It was a ***** to get into 4wd to start with and now its stuck in 4L. I've checked all the linkages and everythings moving fine. It would appear that the problem is inside the transfer case. Has anyone experienced this before? I"ve searched the forum but havn't found anything matching. Is it possible to remove the transfer case from the gearbox incar? or do i need to drop the box? Any help would be great as it just ruined tomorrows fun test day.
Thanks
Mick

I wish mine did that! (I have the opposite problem where it comes out of 4L in the most annoying places )
But yes, you need to drop the Tcase and gearbox together if you are going to take it out.

Ok I took the top cover off today and it all looks intact. Plus it was driving around ok, no noise or anything. It almost feels like one of the detent balls has got stuck or something. Gonna bite the bullet and pull the gearbox out soon. Gonna be a bitch at home on the ground. Last time it came out I was able to do it at work on a hoist with stands and crap.
Oh and the Mounts are all ok. Car wasn't been loaded or anything, just crawling up some fricken ramps, but i've noticed it getting harder and harder to select gears for a little while now, just thought it was old age.
Oh NZ4x4, mine used to have that problem, just check the boot around the gearlever. With mine what was happening was the boot didn't flex enough and when you went into 4L you had to hold it in otherwise the boot would push the lever back up and into N. That used to happen half way up a hill or through a creek or something lol. Failing that, could be worn dog teeth on the selector hubs/rings or detent problem

It is possible to remove just the transfer case, but fiddly. You need to remove the intermediate gear out through the top cover and undo the (very tight) mainshaft nut. You then have access to the gearbox to transfer bolts. Support the back of the engine with a block of wood underneath the flywheel housing. Then you can remove just the transfer case.... Probably easier to remove the whole thing as 1...

Yeah, thanks woop. Its pretty cramped under there, if I had a body lift I'd probably think about it but I've already got the box all undone and ready to come out. Just waitin on a few mates to come help us lift it out. Thinking about sending the whole lot to a tranny mob to get them to look at it. May as well replace anything thats worn while its out. Second time the box has been out in 3 months.
Found out what was wrong, Water has got inside at some stage i think and corroded the High Low shift rod and also the detent balls. Had a mission getting it all out but its all apart now and going to try and clean the shaft up, get some new balls, and replace the front and rear shaft seals while i'm at it. Plus extended T/C and G/B breathers inline with the diffs. Will post pics if anyone is interested.
