Pump has been noisy and leaking a little for sometime now and have finally got around to fixing it (leaking lots now)
After searching here and contacting my local Nissan dealer I picked up a Genuine replacement for $120, good value I reckon.
Replaced the pump with no extra problems but decided to replace the thermostat at the same time, havent had any cooling issues just thought it was a good idea while the system was open.
Busted a bolt when removing thermostat housing, I knew it was going to break as soon as I tried to undo it but figured Id rather fix it now while I had the time.
Drilled the old one and managed to get some of the old, what I thought was bolt out, but there was no sign of thread on it at all, nor was there any sign of thread in the hole? This puzzeled me and my dad (diesel mechanic of 40 yrs), looked like someone had bodged it before. The bolt that busted was also a different type than the other 2.
I didnt have any helicoils left so we went searching and found these things called thread inserts, made by champion. When i get some time i will post a pic.
These things cut there own thread and require no special tools and for a pack of 3 were just over $10. We were both amazed at how easy these things were to use and would highly recommend them. There cheaper and a lot less fidlly then helicoils.

TD42 Water Pump GQ Patrol
Re: TD42 Water Pump GQ Patrol
I'm pretty new to working on my old 1991 4 x 4 Safari Granroad. I will have to replace my water pump very soon as it squeaks a lot, and want to do it myself. I have limited automotive knowledge, but am reasonably savvy mechanically. Can you give me an idea of how long it took you to strip off the old water pump and replace it (excluding the issue you had with the drilled hole) and any major issues I may expect? Also, is there anywhere on the net I can get a free download of a manual for my truck? All help and advice appreciated. Thanks.
