Hi All,
Just wour wanted to get your thoughts on what type of engine conversion is the best way to go for my 91 model 2.4L 22r motor 4runner. I am sick of not having any power or torque and am keen to create a good tourer/offroader. I have looked into a couple of ways to go e.g.
-install a v6 commodore engine and use marks 4wd conversion kits.
-install a newish toyota 2.7L engine
-Install a diesel engine.
I am after something that will be strong and reliable and not to thirsty.
And of cost not to expensive.
I am looking forward to your thoughts.

My father and I are rebuilding a 84 hilux (slightly different but anyway), and we are still undecided on engine choice. But from the research i've done this is what i have come to believe:
1KZ: Technically good engine, power torque and economy, however reliability isn't great, and some other issues with the EFI.
V6 GMH: Cheap to buy, easy to do, good power and torque, terrible fuel economy, and 6 cylinder rego. Some minor issues with earlier engines, ecotec would be better.
2.7 Lux: less power and torque than above, failry reliable engine, better economy than V6, got nothing on diesels though. Can purchase for reasonable price.
Some other engines:
2.8L (3L): reasonable torque (when turboed), good econmy achievable, more reliable and simpler to set up than 1KZ. This is the engine we are currently prefering for our requirements.
2.4L (2L): Too gutless. Probably the hardiest engine of the lot, but even with a turbo, its still a bit little.
V8 308: good output, which requires some good input (fuel wise) too. Cheap to purchase, install etc. Heavy block, and 8 cylinder rego are killers.

Wheeling on completely wicked angles, without even looking stable.
The engine is more than adequately powered for the uses outlined. The only time I found mine lacking was towing other than that it went fine. As for a gas guzzler hardly...........mine averaged 11-12L/100km around town and it wasnt babyed. The engine is underpower, a gas guzzler and does not have any comparison to the 1KZ or V6 options.
Better for 1KZ.
The V6 is a shitbox and the diesel is anything but cheap for a halfcut. If I hadnt needed to tow with mine I would have turboed it.

or a 1UZ-FE i am currently in the process of producing an adaptor for the lexus A341E auto to a R1FA top shift gear driven transfer. This adaptor is 90mm thick I will post up a 3D rendering tommorow. If your interested PM me i'll give you more information.

-Less chance of breaking other components (Drivetrain etc)
We have them in our worktrucks and they are great. (4x2 Traybacks + gear - aprox 200 kg). They never miss a beat and we get about 490k per tank (65L) - not driven like grandma's either. They can adequately tow.
The V6 will get about 18L/100k's driven normally. Conversion will cost between 2.5k - 6k, depending on how much you can do yourself.
The 1KT would be my pick, but a halfcut alone is about 5-8k. Then there's other stuff to change to change from petrol to diesel.
V8 - If it's a toy, then great, but you'll have burnt crusty bits on your pants pocket if it's a daily driver. Oh, and you'll need a long range tank
Conversions from Surfs/Diesel lux's can cost between 2.5 - 5k

Transfer adaptor rendering, oil galleries not shown here these are early renders ran out of time today at work to get some new ones. Notice it is also clockable to 2 positions. Also not shown is the new output shaft required for the auto. Which is a brand new shaft with a female 21 spline output, this adaptor will only work with top shifting transfers.

Attached are some picture of a billet transfer case adaptor I produced.
It requires a new output shaft which is currently away being hardened. The whole adaptor is 90mm thick. The length of the whole unit from the front face where the bell housing bolts to, to where the transfer case bolts is 500mm.
The adaptor is clockable 15* to get the lower part of the transfer case out of the rocks.

I just put a 7mge (3 litre straight 6) supra motor in my hillux. Its a bolt in conversion with the right parts. Its no rocketship but a shitload better then the old 22r. This was my first ever conversion and i had no major dramas! 7MGE has about 142kw from factory.

142 KW is still pretty respectible in a vehicle the weight of a dudlux/fourskinner.

hi, could you give me some more info about this swap pls??? if i could pick this engine up for cheap, it might be better to go this route than to try n rebuild my 22r. is there a carb version of this engine?

Went the 7MGE because it puts less strain on the rest of the drive train where the 7MGTE turbo would blow the standard g52 box to pieces!
Truck is only for camping and getting away not racing.
There is no carby version of this motor that i know of!!!

7M-GE was the motor in the 3.0L cressida. Cronic head gasket chewer, and hates to rev. Also in the early supras. No carby version (dunno why you would want one, the injection motor runs well).

From everything I have read about the 7m's is the factory spec on the head bolt torque is way to low, pull em down half as much again and they dont have any issues. I'll put in another vote for the 3RZ but also throw the 22RE into the mix. It'll give some extra power and torque over the 22R but best of all - it's easy and cheap!

You need to ask your self what you want out of your truck?
If you want a high power truck be prepared to spend big!
I was going to do a commodore v6 conversion but they are to expensive for what u get. It was around $2500 just for the conversion kit alone!!!
That is not including labour, motor, gearbox, consumables and all the "other little stuff" If you go for the v6 be prepared to either go the automatic option or keep rebuilding your G52 gearbox as it wont handle the motors torque.
I wanted a cheap conversion that had as little custom parts as possible and that's what i got. Nearly every part of my conversion is an off the shelf Toyota part and they all bolt up. The 7mge makes its power further up the rev range then the V6 so its easier on the gearbox. Your already moving when the power kicks in.
The v6 has better torque but this is what will blow your gear box apart.
I tow a customeline camper behind my truck with ease at 120km down the highway ,and towing from the lights i can keep up with traffic easily.
As i have said it is no rocket ship (on par with 3.4l hilux I'd say) but it is exacly what i wanted, a well BALANCED truck that is easy to get parts for and didnt cost a fortune.

wanted a carb because i'd be interested in a very straight forward bolt in swap. dont want to deal with the wiring loom for the efi, ecu, etc etc etc. jus bolt in and go. but alas, i'll jus rebuild the head with a stage one cam. already has headers and extractors, oh well.lay80n wrote:7M-GE was the motor in the 3.0L cressida.
