stuffed gearbox
stuffed gearbox
i have wrecked my gearbox in my 98 coily sierra (second gear) does any one no how much a new one is and arethe leaf spring sierra gearboxes the same
hey mate i've blew my up on the weekend
by the sounds it made i think i broke the input shaft.
the gearboxes i think should be same?
i've just got hold of a leafy 5 speed i've gotta split them as my case has been modified to mate up to the 1600 motor so when i do it i'll be checking so if you like i 'll have a good look and get back to you.

Leaf boxes are externally the same and will be a straight swap. a WT box would be better as it has the 5th gear and neutral switches which were used to assist with emmisions control. (yes, even with the carby - there is a little box behind the dash that, fo all I know, contains an energy polariser, or some crystals or something, but the NT's don't have it. Nt's only have a reverse switch.
I seem to recall that coilers have slightly different ratios, but it is no big deal.
Good boxes are not cheap, I have seen $500+ asked for them, but accroding to a knowledgable gearbox guy I know, they are very, very strong- and when you compare them to the 1.0 box (or even the 660 box, which is dealing with the same power as the 1.3) the 1.3 box looks like it came from a kenworth truck.
Sure, anything can wear out, but I haven't heard of actual box breakage before.
I'm not beaing a sh1t, but was there any water in the box was it howling like crazy for the last year, or alterntively, you might want to have a think about your driving style - plenty of sierra boxes live long and happy lives behind 1.6's and with big tyres.

the main difference between the sj80 and the sj70 is the switches as mentioned above, a sj80 has a reverse switch only, the sj70 (or leafy 5 speed box) extra switches will not mate up to anything in the coily as there is nothing, you can still use the box though. the other is the gear ratios, nothing to worry about there iether as it is very minimal.
what you really want to check with your sj80 being a 98 model is the spline in the clutch plate, sierra came with 18 and 20 tooth plates. 98 used a 18 tooth from memory, nearly all other sierras use the 20 tooth.

Yeah, towing can be a problem - a members car in the Vic club here had a really bad box- it had about 160,000 on it and the car had been a trolley tug at a supermarket so it had probably never gone out of second gear.
first and second were really bad but third and above were fine.
Still, this isn't a break - as I said, you can wear anything out given time, but in themselves, 1.3 gearboxes, if the oil is clean and they are not abused, will outlast the rest of the car.
