Yes, from somewhere in QLD
No, I wouldn't, to me, nothing says 1970's cheesy like glass. I spend too much time on resting on my panels to have the crack/splinter, but that's just my opinion.

I'd never go glass but kevlar could work. You can pound on that pretty hard. Used to run kevlar reinforced hulls on the jetskis in rapids  and the kevlar engine covers we made could take being centre punched when racing without issue.

Reckon you'll find ozeast are mostly into cruiser 40 series gear... they do a jeep kit that'll fit onto a sierra chassis... with varying degrees of success..

The important question is how much weight would you actually save?

In the Sierra it would cost $2250NZD = $2000AUD plus postage
to replace the doors, windscreen surround, bonnet, and front fenders...
How much weight would this translate to???

generally speaking... glass doesn't save much weight... carbon fibre on the other hand... which i believe the kiwis also used to offer...

fibreglass

Post by want33s »

I believe there is a demand for windscreen frames but as for other panels I doubt it would be worth the time and $$$ involved in making molds and then fibreglass/kevlar panels, doors and guards. They would be lighter (slightly) than steel but would be much more easily damaged. If you made them with Kevlar they would be more expensive than new Suzuki. What about stamping them out of aluminium???

1/2 doors and windscreen frames.

also rear doors maybe for people that dont have the tyre on there with plastic window can save about 20kg at least on a hardtop with rear door.

IS there a demand for the front roof section in glass? I'll copy mine if there is. I am making fibreglass bonnets for Falcon anyway! Whole roof same as pictured is only $350 (pre-loved)on Ebay.

There would be substantial demand for a front roof section in glass I think, but if you are making moulds, the roof to work with would be the factory optional roof - it is by far the best looking and neatest produced. Most of the others are bulky and overhang the front of the windsreen frame a little.

What about something similar to the Maruti backs? ideal for ute conversions.

Does anyone have any more info/pics on these things?

I would love one (slightly modified to suit my lwb) if they can be made.

I reckon if someone started making maruti walls, and had theyre prices right, they would get a hell of a lot of business. Mainly because they are so rare and popular.

That rear section lid looks like its copied off the bonnet and guard tops. Shouldn't be too hard to make but not worth doing for only one or two. Would have to make minimum 10 to be worthwhile. If I made 10, cost would be about $500-$700 each plus the sliding or fixed window.

These were pretty common in the US when the sierras were new. Personally, I don't think they are a good idea -

The tailgate seals badly on sierras and the load area is very shallow so I reckon that this would make the car pretty useless.
