OK all,
i have searched & searched on here aswell as other forums & after being out wheeling with another vitara which is currently running air lockers front & back! i have made the decision than i want a rear air locker for the time being & in the future once a GV steel housing has been sourced one in the front also.
after speaking to two different arb stores i got 2 different answers reguarding the fitment into the rear of a '97 j20a vitara. supplying the locker was no problem, it was the installation that required changing of diff parts or axles to earlier vitara & even then they were'nt quite sure about everything that had to be done. the other store didn't seem to think that it would be a big problem?
now the question i ask has anyone fitted an rear air locker to a manual '97 j20a vitara? and if anything what needed to be changed to made it work?

Shouldn't be anything. I think that they are confusing themselves with the GV. While you're at it, it would be worthwhile getting hold of some 5.125's as this will help correct your gearing.

cheerz once again cj,
so there isn't a drama with the install? is it the RD79 or the RD74 that fits into my model? i like the idea of the 5.125's whats a fair price to pay for a set of good 5.125's? i guess i better start ringing around an hunt some down, new or 2nd hand?
I guess with 5.125's i should be back close to my original gearing + transfer gears i should be able to crawl again.

Should be an RD79 for the rear and a RD88 for the front. The 5.125's are in all the 1.6 manual Vits and also the 1.6 4spd autos. Nic's front will work for you. If I recall right, you're running 30's now so it should put you back to stock type gearing spot on.

so the air locker will go in, but i guess if i'm pulling the rear centre i should change to my diffs to 5.125's & a steel GV housing...... talk about a snowball.
getting rid of the alfoil front diff would be a good move.

If you're only putting an ARB in the rear and you are swapping to 5.125's at the same time then you will need a front diff set up with 26 spline sidegears to accept your drivers side CV as the early Vit diffs had 22 splines. If you are putting in an ARB front too then just get the RD88. If you're going to look for a steel housing then the GV one is a direct bolt in but the XL-7 one needs some mods to the crossmember mount.
