EXCESSIVE TYRE WEAR

EXCESSIVE TYRE WEAR
Howdy,
On the weekend I had to pull my rear drums appart to clean them out and when I removed the wheels i noticed that the rear left tyre is wearing dramatically quicker than the right.
After some thought I have only been able to come to one conclusion. That my rear diff is a LSD (yet to confirm this) and with the left turns being so much tighter than right turns and the fact that I'm running 31's the tyre is simply shreding itself.
Am I heading in the right direction do you think or am I out with the fairies again?
If this is a problem I have to live with I might just have to get myself some stock rims and tyres to rum around town with. I don't want this to happen when I get Mickey T's as it could prove expensive at $260 a tyre.
Any thoughts?

You'd be one of the lucky few if you had an LSD in the rear !!
I'm sure if it is, you could offer it for sale and get lots of takers if it is the LSD causing your problems !!
I think if it was the LSD causing your problem, it would mean that its 'tight' and offers excellent traction off-road, for if it was loose, it shouldn't cause too many problems with tyre wear !!
Get a wheel alignment and balance first, check your rear diff to see if it's running true.
I'm pretty sure, if it is an LSD, it should have a little red sticker on the housing somewhere to let you know, especially handy for oil changes etc.
Hmmmmm

Isn't LSD standard ???
Both Rockys I owned had LSD standard at the back?
Nope - 90% of Feroza's didn't come standard with a LSD - only the very first EL models I think ( top of the range ) in 1989-90 had a LSD as standard, certainly no Aussie Widetrack Feroza's had them. When I bought mine new in 1994 it was a $500 option to get the LSD in the rear - I ticked the box & was then told it would take 6 months to get a LSD Feroza as they were only available on special order from Japan ( the whole Feroza that was - not just the LSD !!!!!! )
Told them where they could stick that idea - bought a normal open Diff one & took it down the next month to Diff Trans Spares who promptly fitted a tightened factory LSD in for $1100 drive-away - this thing chirped the tyres round corners for the 1st 10000km The Diff Trans guy told me the Feroza factory LSD was actually made by Powertrax in the US - but you couldn't order it direct through them unfortunately
However - if you are after a LSD rear - nearly all the Jap Import Diffs are LSD - if you find a Jap Importer ( I used Toyhatsu in Melbourne for mine ) then you can get nearly anyyhing you are after - I bought my 5.57:1 Rear with LSD & matching 5.57:1 Front which I Lincoln Locked for A$1000 complete units. Gave me two complete spares for the shelf as well.
You can check for LSD yourself - jack both rear wheels off ground - release hand brake. Rotate one tyre by hand, if other tyre rotates in same direction you have a LSD - if it goes the other direction - you have an open Diff.

I have delt with Toyhatsu and also with Daiparts in Breaside and found both very good.
Another ignorant question . Can you fit LSD from Rocky to Feroza ?
Sorry if this sounds stupid and I never owned Feroza but I was under impression that most of the parts were the same or similar .

[But, of course, why do I care, cause I got
Diff locks, diff locks,
Front and Rear diff locks
Ok Bundy.
What sort of diff locks have you got ?
I would consider one for the front as I already have LSD on the back.
Give me a rough idea how much it would cost to fit one ?

US Rocky = Aussie Feroza Widetrack
Aussie Rocky is completely different truck.
Aussie Rocky shares NO Drivetrain components at all with any model Feroza. All diffs / axles / tx cases / gearboxes / engines are totally different.
Pre 1993 Rocky's had live axles front & rear with leaf springs that are different to the IFS / Rear Coils from 1994 on - I am sure the Detroits were only ever avaiable for the pre 1993's - which was handy as the front & rear diff centres are interchangable.
Lokka ( 4wd Systems ) in SA made a pre 1993 Rocky Diff Lock as well I believe - might be still available ??

Well here's the deal. I was out with the fairies and the pixies too by the looks of things.
No LSD on my rig. Took it to the mechanic down the road and looks like it's the rear alignment.
So being the sly bastard that I am, gonna tell the missus that it's the shocks that are bent and get them Ranchos sooner rather than later... just means she'll have another shopping spree.

Well I think I shall be getting a second opinion then.
I have looked at the bushes on the leaf springs and they look a little "tired" on the left side.
Might just get some new ones and still get the new shocks and have it all done at once so I don't pay for the labour twice.
Well just while I'm at it I will be ordering my body lift kit soon and in the meantime making the brackets for the bumpers and other bits as I have 2 weeks off over Christmas.

The point of my last paragraph above is that I will be taking photos and typing step by step instructions and was wondering if anyone has anywhere it can be posted.
Maybe we can set up a website and we all help in the cost of maintaining the site etc... www.daihatsu4x4.com.au
