The cam and lifters are suprising ly in good condition and dont appear to need changing, so Ill save the money, besides to do the cam Ill have to take the engine out and thats a head ache.Mark2 wrote:I would think about replacing the cam and lifters while its pulled down.

Ok so onwards and upwards. Ive had the car off the road for a few weeks now. I ve had to do the work myself because the leader of the opposition wont let me spend the money to get em done proffessionaly.
So after alot of research I have decided to port the heads myself. Ive only done a little work ont he muffler ports.
Ive also had to do some conciderable cleaning. as per the previous photos wher you cqould see all the crud build up. It took me a long time to get the heads clean again.
Im quite happy with the result so far. all the valves have been cleaned and ive polished the surfaces again. Just as a added extra ive ;leaned up and sprayed the rocker covers red. Il also do the top of pleham chamber to match.

That is very beautiful.
Pity it has to get dirty again.
Did yours have teflon seals or just umbrella seals. (looks like teflon)
I had my inlet guides machined for teflon seals and I did not put seals on the exhaust valves.
I read somewhere sometime that it was mainly after teflon seals were put on the exhaust that the problem occured at its worst.
My oil consumption is only about 1.25 litre per 5000Km using Mobil 1 5-50 whch finds its way out of a small leak at the back of the valley. Most oil is sucked into the inlet by the pressure differential.

Thanks. Yes they are Telflon seals. Ill put em back on though.
I do have a question though because so many people have told me so many diffrent ideals.
Whats the best oil to use?
Ive alwways gone with Penright but ,the latest advise I got was Valvoline half belend or something, previouse to that it was Castrol Magnatec, previous to that Shell, you say Mobile , but ive been told neve to use stnthetis oils they have to many addatives which varnish every thing.
So which oil is best?

go to supa shit or what ever you have near by and get the a valve laping kit cheap as shit to lap the valves back in as clean as they look they wont seal with out being laped in . the valve guide oil seals i used were just an oring type thing the teflon or unbrela type work fine and you only realy need them on the inlet valves the exaust valves being hotter can do with extra lube from the oil and only being open on the exaust stroke means it cant suck any oil in to the combustion chamber and burn on cumbustion. as for porting all i would do is stick the gaskets on and match port to suit the gaskets . un less you have the skill or acces to a flow bench you could be doing more harm then good
range rover & series one landy!
Ive allready reset the valves in. And the porting is as you suggest just to match the exaust gaskets. I wasnt game to do anymore than that.
Ive finished assembling the first head now and as you can see a defiante imorivment on when it was taken out.
Ive also matched the plenham chamber to the rockers as I said I would do. Quite chuffed with me self

All that gunk in the heads is quite common, i found that the oil doesnt drain properly and collects in the heads where it gets baked untill you get the flaky shit floating around. I ported and matched my intake/ exhaust ports when i did my rangie heads and also ground some new draining channels so the oil would drain back thru the valley into the sump.
It sure does look purty !
