RB-30 carby engine/Vl commodor fuel injected

Post by johno »

Ive got a 1990 gq with a stuffed RB-30 engine on gas and have been offered a Vl fuel injected engine free, can I simply swap heads, manifolds, distributor, etc and bolt in straight up to the gq bell housing. Would appreciate help on this, I dont want to stuff around with a diesel, just get up and running and sold.

thanks johno

I don't know yet......I fired it up Wednesday after finishing the conversion, drove out the driveway to go to Gas research to tune it and thought I'd give it a squeeze even though its not tuned...just in first gear....well

It tore the clutch lining off!!! so it wont provide any drive lol

Picked up an exedy clutch and pressure plate yesterday so ill drop it in this weekend and we will see this week after its tuned.

If you have any tune issues I worked for Gasresearch Australia and Gasresearch performance center for 10 years as the tuner.

what turbo did you use. id be keen to see what power figures you get cause im looking at doing the exact same set up on mine

as for the being the same the patrol motors use a bigger oil pump and sump and a few other little things to make them stronger, but yes it will bolt in. you can find the patrol motors resonable cheap. i payed $400 for motor gearbox and transfer

I was going to put a 4.2 diesel in it then I got crook and my son who was helping moved away, ive tried to sell the vehicle on this board but had no luck, a mate says he will help if I know exactly whats involved. As I go into hospital in may for a cpmplete shoulder reco I need to get this up and going. If anyone wants it I will email photos to you, through in the comodore engine to. hey just remembered the gq engine has extractors, gotta being be a big selling point ha ha

Ok matey, basically take the VL motor.....and fit it with your sump and oil pump, patrol sump is bigger.

Then if you want to keep it carby swap intakes and dizzys and your done, the heads are all the same as is everything else....

Hmm Jee this thing sounds like a weapon ! I think i would have been better off doing this instead of a TB42 turbo...

Can't wait to see some figures..

sorry for pinching ya thread....i'll update here till i make a new thread.

It runs 6.2 0-100km/h at 2.3 ton with me in it. I couldn't run the full 1/4 mile at full throttle as it pings in 4th (getting dizzy recurved next week). But it ran 15.6 with 1st, 2nd and 3rd flat out then 4th basically rolling across the line with little throttle applied.

It goes past 160km/h like its going down hill, will happily do standstill or light up the tyres of the line. I didn't get the power figure yet as my mate picked it up for me Friday as I was busy, but I need to go back soon to get my paperwork so I will ask.

Fuel economy believe it or not is better!!!! yet to work out averages, but did a day in gembrook and toolangi yesterday with my mates identical non turbo and I killed his economy even with my thrashing.

I will post some vids soon in a post dedicated to this project.
