turbo systems got prices need advice.

gday guys

ok ive got onto a couple of turbo joints and ive been given a few prices etc. ive been told by one mob that the exhust size dosnt matter? my understanding of it was the bigger the better so long as it allows some backpressure so i wouldnt want to go to big? also i can no longer get an intercooler for a 2.8 hiluz as there is no where to mount it and the size that you could fit its pointless having it.

prices are as follows

a- schwitzer turbo kit with a 2.5" exhust fitted $3450 roughly
b- dts turbo kit with 2.1/4" exhust fitted $3500
c- safari turbo kit with standard exhust fitted $3200 (they say standard exhust is best)

im leaning towards a or b as they seem to know what they are talking about as they are dedicated turbo joints. and i dont like the way i was spoken to by c.

anyone have an opinion on this? hoping to get it sorted quick as im heading up to perth at end of the week and would like it down whilst im up there

Everyone to there own brand but when I was going to get the hilux done it was by Turboglide in Wollongong. They fit garret turbos. Now these blokes have been in the game a long time, 30 years or more to be exact. Now he reckons the schwitzer and dts are too small and get far to hot. I rang a couple of other places as well wont mention there name and got the part/model numbers of there turbos and referred back to Turboglide.What I did find out that the turbo's the others were using were only rated to 2.5Litre motors so these turbos were screaming there nut off. Now yes they spun up quicker but if cruising at 110klm there temps were huge hence the garrett turbo which mind you have parts available from almost anywhere in Australia so never get cought out and are a lot bigger under the bonnet. The Mitsi turbo's are another popular one but same thing. Now I'm no mechanic or have much knowledge of turbos but they will all take your hard earned $$$ with out problems. The reason I didnt get turbo is I tow alot. Yep I know doesnt make sense this is where you really need it, BUT after speaking to alot of people including people on here and other forums I came to the conclusion that it wasnt worth the $$$ or the headache of it overheating which was my main concern. I do a lot of tours outback stuff and didnt want any drama's. Yes they all said to me but if your not overheating why would it once the turbo was fitted. Blokes have fitted bigger radiators, new viscous clutchs to the fans, got rid of that and put electric fans, changed back over and fitted electric ones as well as clutch fans etc, and never solved there overheating issues hence why I didnt do it. Want more grunt more go uphills, take off, pulling, whack in a V6 commodore motor and put an auto behind it. Cheap as chips to buy and very reliable. This is just my opinion and there are plenty of guys out there that dont have issues but most wont when trotting around in the scrub. Its on the open roads on a 35/40 degree day running aircon that you have the problems. Just my thoughts. Everyone to there own opinion and I'm sure plenty will disagree with me.Regards Steve M

thanks for the reply given me something to look into. i dont much towing and if i do its only a short trip like a trailer load of wood or a dingy or motorbike and thats it. im not really interested in a v6 or v8 anymore as i love the simplicity of my motor and not having many electrics is great as i love my mud and water :twisted:

ive decided im gonna hold of on the turbo a bit longer and while im in the city im gonna go a see a few people and talk to em, better then over the phone i think.

also after a manager of safari reading my post on another forum ive been informed that intercoolers are still available.

still keen on hearing what others have to say

Thats interesting, I worked for DTS and the TDO5 turbo in the 80 and 100 kits for the 1HZ are bigger than the Garret T3 turbos supplied by Safari and they are water cooled and they have a full 360 degree thrust unlike the STD Garrett that is 270 degrees, this makes for a stronger turbo at high boost. At DTS they are Australian agents for Garrett, Mitsubishi, IHI, shwitzer, KKK, at the development time they chose from the selection of turbos available to them what was felt to be the best performance, life expectancy and value.
I saw lots of turbos come in for repair, the main two failures were blockage of the oil return due to hot shutdown(water cooled turbos are less prone) and thrust failure(when you turn the boost up this increases the thrust load on the turbo)

Hi there PGS 4WD, thats what I thought every one to there own opioin. Interesting to hear from some one not trying to sell one and there opinion. I know for sure that Turbo glide do not use water cooled turbos on any of there diesel engines only petrol as he explained to me that the exhaust temp on the 2.8 diesel (not sure on other makes) should not exceed 500 degrees c as this is where you start to run into trouble. He said water cooling is only another hassle if you should blow a hose etc. He said they will pump out the water and if you dont notice well we know what happens. He said not required just a waste of money. I rang one place in western sydney and they wanted 5 1/2 g to fit one up including a compensator, once again the bloke at wollongong said total waste of money UNLESS you have an efi pump then he said is still not that much.I know on the later model hilux's they have a 3Litre classed as a 5 L and there was the 5LE which was the later model with electronic pump. Good to hear different sides of the story guess thats what these forums are all about. Regards Steve M

I run a DTS with duel compensator and the compensator made a huge difernece in fuel ecomony and power.

I have the 1HZ and run 16psi boost. The turbo is water cooled and I have had a leaky hose. I found the problem before my low water alarm kicked in. As for the the exhaust temp hitting over 500. Well the more fuel you put in the higher the exhaust temp. I am not that familar with the hilux diesels, however I am pretty sure that if you pump in enough fuel you would break the 500 mark easily. It all comes down to how it's tuned in.

Thats like saying dont put a radiator in in case it blows a hose. The DTS kit come with braided teflon hose not rubber, as many kits do, which is much better around the heat of the exhaust( AXT kits also use braided hose). The cooler the turbo core the longer it will last.

I'm not sure what the guy with the EFI pump is going on about, compensators are for mechanical pumps, its true a turbo it will work without at modest boost without excessive smoke, if you are wanting something more then a compensator is great as it will reduce visible smoke on take off(as the turbo spools), some add fuel at higher boost levels also, the compensator gives the pump a load reference to boost so fuel enrichment is proportional.
If you have a later electronic pump then you may want to consider a chip like the Rapid chip that can be programmed to supply additional fuel, it also has a throttle position reference so additional fuel isn't supplied at cruise. I used to have a 5LE as a work car with DTS kit on it, it was good but didnt have the chip so the extra fuel that would have made it hoot wasnt there, it had used all the fuel by 3000 rpm and tended to fall over.

what is this 360 thrust? think i will go for a intercooler for the reasons pgs commented in his last post. most the kits i have looked at all have braided lines etc so there shouldnt be to much of a problem with that.
