The Warn 10,000 has a factory fitment 38m of 10mm wire rope. For synthetic 55m of 8mm, 45m of 10mm or 40m of 12mm. Recommend you use 10mm or 12mm.

Warn 8,000 has a factory fitment 30m of 8mm. For synthetic 45 of 8mm, 40 of 10mm or 35 of 12mm – recommend you use 10mm.

Shop around for price. Don't forget quality - not all synthetic rope is created equal. That's the last thing you want to let you down when you are depending on it.

Great point, which is one thing that gets to me.

You never know what your getting, with people trying to make a buck buying cheaper stuff without having to pay top $ from ARB etc.

I dont think you would go wrong with blokes like Tiny or Giantracing etc, but everyone seems to sell some different stuff/brand/colour/etc which they claim is better than the bloke next door.

is there any real way to tell quality stuff from CCS(cheap chinese shit)?

As a general rule if the price seems to be a real one off bargain then it is likely to be of lesser quality. Unfortunately, when it is new, most ropes look the same except some are different colours. Trusted vendors as you have stated wouldn’t dupe anyone as their reputation is more important than saving/making a few bucks. A good question to ask when buying rope from anyone is do they use it [or how many people use that particular rope in competition]? If they don’t or not many others do then why should you.

Yes 8mm will be ok as long as you don’t abuse it thinking it will be fine “just” because you are dragging a lighter vehicle around.

Thanks for the info ....

3/8 is 9.x mm so that would be kewl? or 5/16th ok?
Note: Compare to 5/16" wire cable with 9,800lb strength, and 3/8" wire cable at 14,400lb strength

http://www.okoffroad.com/stuff-winchrope-mp.htm
these prices ok anyone?

PS. What is the actual weight difference in a spool of wire to spool of plasma

EG standard rope on a Warn 10k to plasma???

3/8 is close enough [9.53mm actually].

5/16 is 8mm [or close enough to it] – a bit light for serious work in your medium to heavy 4x4s.

Amsteel is a good brand and yes those prices are ok depending on freight costs.

Actual weight difference – 10mm X 45M of Dynex on my high mount weighs approx 2.2Kg and the wire equivalent 8mm X 46M is approx 14.5kg – so the synthetic rope saves 12kg.

Another buyer beware tip – it is easy to confuse people with figures. To compare rope is like comparing fruit – you cannot compare an apple with an orange. They can all quote the strength of their ropes differently. One might quote the highest breaking strength of all the test samples, another might quote the average breaking strength, another breaking strength at the splice [weakest point], and others quote the breaking strength of their premium rope [which is always far more expensive].

I have used 10mm rope [from the same manufacturer] one style rated at 10,700kg and another at 18,400kg. Catch is the higher breaking strength costs almost 30% more again. Refer to my earlier post – you mostly always get what you pay for [provided you are not being ripped off by a dodgy B#%&$@d].

Rather than starting a new thread I thought I would bring this one back up.
How much 3/8" rope will fit on a High mount?
I know the standard is 8mm wire 46m long.
I have read 125 feet (38m) for 3/8 but can a few more metres be crammed on?

Also I have read that getting a loop spliced on both ends is the go so you reverse the cable when the first bit gets worn will attaching the rope this way cause less capacity or is it a negligable loss?
Cheers
Paul.

Here's a very good reference document that Dynamica rope have generated.
It lists a number of common winches and the suggested rope lengths, drum diameter etc.

That seems about right 1/4 (105USD) of that is shipping cost though, which is always the killer on small shipments. Don't forget you may have to pay an extra 5-10% for duties in oz if your unlucky. Don't forget to ask for a 10 foot rope protector for an extra 10 or so bucks, will be worth it in the long run.

Aluminum fairlead $39.95
Freight to Australia $45.00
