as the topic suggests, what do you guys reckon about putting an alloy fuel tank into the back of my gq shorty, say about 60 litres. I figure if gas is ok then fuel could be ok??!

Not a good idea with petrol, cause of the fumes. IIRC its illegal with petrol or diesel but I wouldn't worry too much with diesel if it was me its hard enough to light that crap with a match

PJ i think the old jeeps are the same, although they are open top. i know of a few vehicles with tanks inside for diesel.
i'm just wanting to get a general consensus about it from a few people.

couldnt see any major issues if it were a proper certified fuel cell with correct "dash" fittngs etc as used in race applications, i would be speaking with your relevant road authority or an engineer though, and asking the question of whether another alternative (underbody tank) is perhaps a more suitable option.

Some of the older celicas had the fuel tank mounted behind the back seat, in the same space as the boot and the car inside cabin. And as PJ said the 40's had the fuel tank under the drivers seat.
I dont think it would be a problem as long as it is built, mounted adn vented properly.

i just wouldnt want any fuel tank anywhere near me that could rupture in an accident and spray/pour petrol over me. one spark of flame and youd be stuffed.

The more important question would be why? What do you hope to achieve by doing this?

The negative apart from safety, is you are raising the centre of gravity. Yes older cars did have taniks behind the back seat, but ADRs have changed. You coul;d do it with an approved fuel cell, as approved by CAMS but these are expensive.

If it is to give better clearance under the vehicle, I have a two tank system undder our shorty, that holds a toal of 140lt, but is above the chassis. rails and does not get damaged.

I have used this set up to go accros the desert using an alloy boat fuel tank with quick connect boat fitting and a fuel pump into the main tank. I was carring diesel with the tank strapped down and the breather to the outside of the vehicle.

i wouldnt use this method with petrol

just because it has being donme in the past ie the 40s etc, it doesnt mean it is safe or you should do it in your vehicle

There is plenty of places in a GQ shorty to put tanks under the cab, I would be trying at all costs to keep petrol out of the cab

if you are going to put it in the cab why not just buy a few $20 jerry cans and carry them. atleast you can remove them if needed and dont need lots of engineering and plumbing
