clutch will not disengage

Post by salli »

I drove through some salt water about a meter deep on Sunday and i had some electrical issues afterwoods so i had to get towed off the beach. Its been parked since Sunday anyway today i get into my car and try to move it and the vechile starts to launch when i have the clutch pedal pressed down all the way and i have selected 1st gear or reverse gear.I can't get it to take off as it will just stall ,i can only get it moving in lowrange without it stalling. But i have no clutch ,i have checked the clutch cable and adjustment and its ok<the fork is moving properly and the cable is not broken. If i push the clutch pedal down its doing nothing.Has anyone had this happen to them before ?

I believe the clutch plate muct be stuck on the flywheel ,or i have a deformed pressure plate or something.Or the clutch plate is tight&rusted on the input shaft splines.
I hosed into the bellhousing of the gearbox with no luck, looks like the gearbox will have to come out,has anyone had this problem before?

your right the clutch plate has rusted to the flywheel

if you cannot free it buy popping the clutch in either forward or reverse it will be time to do a clutch

My brother in laws mini motor did a similiar thing as the motor sat for over a year. The way we got arround this was to start it in first , rev it with the clutch fully compressed , down , then use the brakes to slow vehicle but not stall about 300m and the clutch let go. It is better to do it while it is hot so let the engine warm up , Cheers Paul.

agreed. salt water is a bugger!

try and pop the clutch a few times as above. it should break free easy enough. you might have to remove an inspection cover plate and give it a tap. whats sort of vehicle is it?

otherwise, get ya self a new clutch and seal ya bell housing :finger:

Yeh thanks for the replies guys ...i give it ago see what happens...The clutch is not old ,and not worn,If i have to remove it i am hoping to just use some sandpaper to clean it.Maybe some emery paper on the flywheel.

Hi all, Years back I had an MGB that used to seize up if I didn't drive it often enough. I used to start it in neutral and get someone to rev the engine while depressing the clutch. I lay underneath and sprayed disc brake cleaner onto the clutch through the drain plug. Try to avoid the bearing.

My clutch got stuck after getting a bit too excited with a pressure washer and letting it sit parked for a couple of weeks straight after washing. I tried standing on brakes etc but in the end I went for a drive up my hilly street with the clutch in and it had broken free before I got to the top.
