If you could make some type of cover over the buttons that would be good and it would be good if you could make the pouch water proof as in this years tuff truck I took my one for a swim with me in the night event luckly it was ok but I now Phill Nobles navi had a swim in the same hole and his did not survive just a thought.
You could velcro the unit inside a plastic container that way it would be hard for the buttons to get bumped and it would be water proof, then put the container in the vest. This is what I was going to do but just put it in my pocket but I like the vest idea.

Round Eye Rock Talk System

the system we now run was inspired by the modified home phone setup RUFF used to run. Basically we use the latest top of the line UNIDEN home phones(x2) they are the size and shape of a std flip mobile, and there main features are they do not require a base to link (up to 10 phones, calls are DUPLEX 2way) and the range is easily over 100m line of sight, also being a home phone they have a long talk and standby time as well as having a really good bluetooth setup, so you can use any bluetooth earset. The bluetooth set we are usin is the SCALA -rider headsets which are designed for motorcycle helmets, which have a clip on main unit which is rubber coated and water resistant (can handle pissing rain ) and like most BT headsets have a 150hr standby. the earpeice speaker is the size of a 20c coin and easily fits into most helmets and is MEGA loud.
with everything BT the tiny flip phones can easily be carried in those waterproof camera/phone pouches. so its very good for TT/winch style events, and ther are no annoying buttons to be bumped. as one person just calls the other and he answers by pressing the "answer" button on the BT headset, he then presses his BT to transfer from phone the BT and put it in his pocket ( or anywhere as the BT has upto 10m range as well).
all up cost is about $600-$700. so very comparable to the eartec and a very nice option.

Duplex comms - whatever the system - is indispensible.... don't know what we did before them!
As Z said, we use the eartecs. Only complaint is the spotter (Z) or sometimes driver can bump the buttons and change channels now and then. Would be good if you could lock them or cover the buttons somehow.
Vest looks cool, but pricey. As always though, you get what you pay for...
