As I understand it you can use R & P's from a Vit in a Sierra but is the reverse true? Can I use Sierra R & P's in a Vitara? Roadless gear in the US offer a 5.38 for the Sammi. This would help solve Hi gearing when running larger rubber. http://www.roadlessgear.com/page/RGL/PROD/D/YGA100

I can't answer the compatability question, but i can tell you that I believe the Calmini distrubutor in Perth can get the 5.38's...

On another note: I vaguely recall something about a 5.8x ring and pinion - does that sound right?

either way, i'm sure it's going to get a little weak as the teeth get smaller right?

not sure about your question, but calmini sell a 5.83:1 r&p for the vitara, think its about $1000 though :cry:

Yeah, I know about the Calmini 5.83 gears but I have heard that there isn't much to them, pretty tiny teeth that are easy to damage and expensive to replace. The 5.38 would be a little stronger although won't compensate as well for bigger rubber. Easier than changing to a Sierra t-case or twin t-cases. Just exploring all options.

True. Considering that the diff gearing already appears to be at it's limitations as far as gearing goes (i.e. any higher may lead to failure), it is a fair idea to think that altering gearing further up the driveline would be a good idea.

What is the setup of your car CJ. What engine and what gear box?

There are a few options like the "thorax" i think that may work - depending on what your engine and gear box is...

However, i still think these are 1:1 or 2:1 type items so high range is still likely to remain unaffected.

Maybe what you said about the twin tranfer case (or at least running a sierra case) would be possible... There is a fellow in melbourne that machines off the end of the vitara gearbox and installs a twin transfer setup for sierras using a vitara engine, vitara gearbox (with transfer) and a sierra transfer case behind that...

Your high range ratio would then be 1:1 in the vitara x-fer, and 1.3something in the sierra x-fer case... Then if 1.3 times your stock tyre size (i.e. a 33" tyre) still isn't big enough for you, you could put a rockhopper or even a rockhopper series 3 in the sierra case and really get some stupidly big tyres under there (i.e. start breaking a lot of other stuff :D )

I don't know how possible all this stuff is going to be under a vitara though.. is it a swb?

This setup in the UK is using a Samurai Transfer Box / 4.1 Rockcrawlers / 2WD Low but I would need somebody to build this for me. http://www.k9rdj.co.uk/index.html

The Rock Block won't solve the on the road hi range gearing problem with larger rubber.

This kind of setup looks similar to what i was talking about the fellow in melbourne doing... so, before Moose gets in and says this....

Just read this post so am a bit late.
But, I am fairly sure that the 5:38s are from the suzuki parts bin for the Vitara. So yes you could use them in yours.

I use calmini 5:43s in my sierra, no probs so far (4 yrs.) They are made by Richmond gears.
But I am always conscious of any breakages to any part of my driveline, birfs, axles etc. etc. and drive accordingly.
That is to say, leave the testosterone at home and back off the go pedal before something breaks.

I may have this arse up, but you have a Vitara don't you?
any diff gears that fit a Sierra are only going to fit your front diff as the Vit rear crown wheel is much larger.
Carbed Vitara's came with 5.125:1 ratios which is not much higher ratio than you are talking about anyway.
As I said I may have this arse up.

Yeah, I have a Vitara. But any improvement to Hi when running larger rubber has to be better.

The best gears are the genuine Suzuki gears. They are by far the strongest and most reliable.
The manual vits come standard with 5.125 ratios and the autos with 4.625.

I`m running the 5.125 front vitara ring and pinions in both front and rear carriers of my sierra with ARB lockers. The gears will fit straight into the ARB locker carrier. But you need to install a special shim if you want to install them to a standard carrier.

So to answer your question....yes you can put front or rear sierra ring and pinions into a front vitara carrier. But you will have alot of trouble finding a higher number ratio to suit the rear of a vitara. Not much available unfortunately.

Send Spidertrax an email. They have been stuffing around with rear vitara diffs for years now. If anyone would know , they would.
Ask for Tom Kingston, he is very helpful and knows suzuki`s back to front.
